New drive shaft and now od wont work
Hi everyone, great site....love diggin for info before i take my truck in..
My driveshaft fell out like it has for others, i was going slow, so i didnt crash...i was able to push it back in and drive away after finding a metal strap to fix the broken yoke/bearing one...
I know that wasn't the best thing to do yet I drove around with it out of line I'm assuming, until I could get money to fix...
So I had to get a new one(damn ford non-service junk), that can be serviced!
So about a week after I got my truck back, I was driving slowly down the street and I heard thud, like something heavy falling, a muffled sound like it was coming from deep inside so to speak, I can imagine it was coming from the transmisson/drivetrain area? and then I noticed right away my OD was no more...with similar signs like it works in 1/2nd gear and then goes completely out and gives high reeves...
Any insights was this completely my fault for driving with messed up drive shaft, could that cause OD problems
Or a worse case would be that the trany shop did something?
thanx

I don't think the tranny shop did anything or do I think you did anything by driving it like that.
The first thing that comes to mind is there is two snap rings that hold the overdrive servo in place. These snap rings are known to break and pieces of the fall down into the valve body and hangs a valve that controls part of the 3-4 shift. This will cause the neutral on the 3-4 shift, its very common I see it all the time.
Check out this thread, its the same transmission thats in your truck.

Thanx for the reply..I will check that thread out...So is this pretty hard to deal with..Im some what mechanicaly inclined....Ive had 4 of 8 spark plugs brake off..you know that damn design thing..anyways I pulled them myself with the special tools, wasnt easy but i did it! Ive also changed brakes and rotors bent my truck frame back into place with heat and tree w/ chain...taken my bumber off and put it back on...etc..if i can do this how much harder is that other process..
