So I am pretty sure my alternator took a dump on me. Heard a fairly load squeal from the alternator area while I was driving home tonight. My voltage meter dropped from about 14.5 volts going down the highway to about 12.5. Belt has good tension and isn't slipping. The vehicle is an '88 E250 IDI diesel. Looks like its just 2 bolts to remove and the alternator comes right out. Anything else I should look out for? I will be replacing the voltage regulator as well. From quick glance it appears to be located in front of the passenger side battery. Am I correct on this? Thanks
1. For safety purposes, disconnect the batteries before connecting/disconnecting the alternator.
2. Make sure the batteries aren't low on charge when you go to fire it up with the new one. I'd recommend yanking them and having the auto parts store check/charge them. It's free. The reason I recommend this is because I used to work in auto parts for years and whenever someone brought me back a brand new alternator that didn't work, the common thread was that the battery was real low. I don't know why it should make a difference or if it even does, but I saw it enough times that I'm convinced.
Thanks for the tip. The batteries were new this past October. I will put them on my battery charger prior to firing it up. Just not what I wanted to do in 20 degree temps after work.
All swapped out and working great. One of the easiest jobs I have done on the van. Only thing that made it a pain was that it was in the 20's out. Voltage jumps immediately when I touch the throttle, no more big voltage drop when I kick on the rear fan and voltage remains steady instead of jumping up and down while I am driving around.
I put in a remaned 100A unit. What amp rating is the OEM style?
