Lets not forget that just adding a lenght of hose to the tank and fuel door won't cut it. You have to install a vent tube up to the filler neck. This prevents the fuel from burping back out at you when filling the tank.
I don't like the idea of putting the fuel door behind a license plate because the tank sloshes fuel out the back too easy. That is unless you use a non-vented cap and those are hard to find anymore unless you use on from a newer vehicle.
My dad put a tank out of a 84 old cutlass in his truck. Those gm cars fill from the rear under the license plate, he cut the neck off as it came out of the tank and put a rubber hose on it. The filler is in the bed, right above the filler exit from the tank. He used a marine gas cap. The marine cap works flawless, if you are using a gas filler in the bed, it is waterproof also. You would have to get a aftermarket gas gauge for the gm tank though. Those tanks are very plentiful, He got the tank with sending unit for 20.00 out of the junkyard. any gm tank that has the rear fill should work the same.
I will be moving my tank as well, and am in the planning stages now. The filler behind the license plate idea sounds pretty cool to me. Assuming you got a non vented cap, would it work ok? How would you vent the tank?
I am definately going to be mounting a tank between the fraim rails behind the rear axle. I'm going to keep following this thread.
