rocker shaft pumping oil out the back plug

fresh rebulid on a 61 390 i pulled the valve cover on the driver side to so see if my rockers were oiling properly because i burned a quart in 20 miles started the truck and noticed oil is pumping out the end of the rocker shaft where the little freeze plug goes my old fe had 9/16 plugs my new shafts came with 1/2 i thought maybe the plug was torn so i replaced the plug with a 1/2 i tried to see if i could put a 9/16 but there was no way so i put it all back together and its doing the same thing except its not pumping out with as much pressure my f bolt is in the right spot stands are on right and shaft holes are pointed down what am i missing
