Bad axle seal

So my rear axle has a bad seal on my Dana 60 on the 74 highboy. Anyone have a link to a step by step thread on how to replace the outer seal? Its just a slight leak it looks like but guaranteed to be a mess in the drum I bet

Well that is a no fun task, I would first suggest getting a basic Chilton or Hanes manual, it has a step by step with pics. They are like 12.00 at the most parts stores, don't want to buy the book, go to a library and zerox what you need, 10 cents a page usually.

And or go here for free, page 20 is the rear, 32 is the full floater. http://www2.dana.com/pdf/5309-3.pdf

Since you are getting in there there to replace the seal might as well get new brakes and inner and outer wheel bearings, (timken brand IMO) the bearings should come with the races, but just clean and insp the races and I doubt you will need replace them, but you never know.

Also might as well replace the brake wheel cylinder.....and ck if you need the drums turned. And make sure all you e brake springs are in good condition.

Rent or buy a 2 9/16 (?) socket for the big lock nut to get the rear drum off. Or do the hammer and punch on the edge of the nut trick to remove it. The trick is to get it torqued properly without the socket come reinstall time....

I would jack the leaking side axle tube a little higher than the other to keep the axle from puking gear lube on you when you pop that seal.

Be careful removing the axle shaft bolts...lube first and loosen carefully, you do not want to break one of them.

Here is the link to all the Dana stuff D44.....http://www2.dana.com/expertforms/depdf.aspx?prod=AXL

I did these all about a month ago, and did exactly what 78&79 is saying to do. I also replaced all of the brake hardware. Carquest had the cable for the auto adjuster in stock, it showed "discontinued" at Auto Zone and Oreilly.

Well at least all you have to do is the seal...carb or brake cleaner will get all the leaking lube off the drum. But if your brake shoes are saturated, I would just replace them.

Yea its always something.... Now im trying to figure out where that seal goes... Does it plug right into the end of the axle tube?

Well it has been quite a while since I have been in there, I believe it is part # 1243 and goes the back of the hub. Install the bearing then tap the seal in place.

Ch the axls shaft face itself for wear grooves, if you have that issue, look into a "speadi sleeve" repair. Below is a 14 bolt write up but it explains what it is and does.

And here is another great place to get A TON OF INFORMATION ABOUT EVERYTHING. I only support getting my truck fixed and take all the help I can find.
