2008 SD f350 good deal or stay away?

Hey everyone. I'm a total newbie to the Ford world of trucks and would like some advice please. I have a 1999 tacoma extended cab and was looking to get a tundra, but I've changed my mind. I'm down south , we got some snow, and saw first hand what a f350 could do. WOW!!! I started looking around and came across a f350 super duty , 2008, 104k miles, leather , crew cab, 4x4 , v10 gas truck for $19,500. I'm not towing much , if any, and will mainly use as a daily driver and more likely to see mud than snow. Is this a good deal? Is this a good truck? Should I stick with the diesel trucks? Is 104k to many miles? Truck is clean and in above avg. shape. The build date is 9/07. Thanks for any info.

Nothing based on the information you have sends a red flag. With that being said check normal things you would with any vehicle.

Only thing that comes to mind would be the vacuum operation of the hubs, the hoses can rot over time giving you a vacuum leak.

The v10 is a monster of a motor and most that have them wouldn't give them up. But it does get crappy gas mileage. As a daily driver get ready to see 8-12 mpg. At very best.

Post up some pictures

just the normal things you would look for in a used vehicle.

Since it just passed the 100K mark I would make sure all fluids have been changed to include the front differential.

i recently purchased a similar truck (5.4L instead of V-10, XLT so no leather) with similar miles for a lightly lower price - i dont' see any reason to shy away as long as normal used car stuff checks out.

i did a TON of research on vehicles before hand, reliability ratings, forum rants, recall research, etc across all of the major 1 ton truck manufacturers and selected the F350 because statistically, it came out on top (as long as it was not the 6.0L)

(plus i think it is the best looking, but that was just good luck)

I like my V10 a lot and wouldn't trade it for anything else.

1. Check the exhaust manifold bolts to see if any are missing
2. See if the plugs have been changed. If not they are now past due.

Like it was said don't expect good gas mileage. I get 10-11 typically while empty. With a tuner it has tons of power. No problem spinning both rear wheels from a stop and no brake on dry pavement. With a tuner, the V10 is even more snappy, fun to drive without all the extra maintenance of the diesel. Try to beat them up a little on the price maybe $2k lower or so and youd have a better deal. I have 93,000 miles on my truck and it still rides and drives like new.

That sounds like a nice truck and I think pretty much everyone will agree that if you don't need a diesel don't get one. You will be happy with the V10 and you don't have to worry about the possibility of a large diesel repair bill should you get bad fuel among other things..

Thanks a lot for all the great information. Anything else anyone has to add please do. I'll keep you all posted and hopefully join the crowd with a f350.

I just traded an '06 V10 for an '11 diesel. In many ways, I would prefer that V10 engine as it is about bulletproof. The only downside - spark plugs. They should be or should have been changed. If this is being purchased at a dealer, put that in your contract. Gas mileage - well you do have to pay to feed that 8000 pound vehicle with 416 cubic inches at about 10mpg around town if it has 4.10 gears.

I bought mine for significantly less money, but I haggled for quite a while and it is the basic XL package with power options. Like was mentioned earlier, this truck sounds solid and likely will be for many years and many miles to come. I would get them down on the price a little and make sure the plugs have been changed. You will love the truck.

if its a Lariat fully loaded its a deal, an XLT with most options and leather it sounds fair.
A v10 at 100k is pretty much nothing, seems the v10 has about the same longevity as the diesels and way less repair costs if any, they do suck fuel but the 6.8 has proven to be one of the best engines ford has ever built, you will see perfect running 6.8's with 200,300 and some as much as 400k with proper maint and care, you will find 7.3's, 460's that can compare but few 6.0's with that kind of reliability.
But hey I have a 5.7 chevy with 260k but babied by and old man who died. The v10 is awesome especially the 3v version and with a custom tune they smoke.

As has been said, check the exhaust manifold bolts and the spark plugs. With a build date of 9/07 you should have the one piece plugs, they should be changed at 50k mile intervals but you know how that goes. Have the dealer change them if you don't feel comfortable doing it. After they are changed, change them again at the 150k mark it will only take 90 minutes to do them. Other than those two things it's an awesome engine and trans combo that can't be beat.

That sounds like a good deal to me too. And I would run as far away from any 6.0 or 6.4 as you can. Navistar/international quit making the maxx force series for a reason. If they don't trust their engines in their own truck then I sure won't trust it in mine either.the v10 is a very reliable and durable engine and doesn't have a checklist 20 pages long of things to check/modify before you buy it.

It appears they still are, but highly defined from the psd version. 200 to 300 hp options. We are converting our fleet(800 trucks) to Mack because of all the problems we had with the maxx force. The international rep sent us a letter saying they were shutting down the maxx force line because of reliability issues. I assumed it was the entire line.
