1988 Hard to shift out of park

Got the old rig all tightened up.. no more leaks finally!! Randomly, the transmission is extremely difficult to take out of park or put back into park.. everything seems to work just fine.. but getting in and out of park is extremely difficult.. any ideas?

I had an issue where I pulled up to a red light, had to do something so I put my 95 van in park, then when I was ready to take off I could not get the van out of park. After messing with it I finally got it into drive. The issued was some wiring to the brake. There is a sensor attached to the brake pedal so when you step on the brake you can use the shifter. In my case the sensor was fine, it was the actual wire connected to the sensor that was an issue and when manipulated the right way it worked.

The older one's like the 88 don't have such a sensor.. you can put it in drive with the car off and no keys in the ignition.. I'm wondering if something broke in the shifter (like the button you push in)?
