Front axle & drive shaft

Have a question for those that have worked on these. My 99 F350 4x4 cc lb.
I was under the truck today and turned the front drive shaft, the front axles turned but I could hold them while turning the drive shaft and they would not turn, I thought as long as the drive shaft turned the two axles should also turn. I ask because I can put it in 4x4 and I can feel the difference but when asked to pull hard either front wheel turns. I thought the front axle and front drive shaft should be locked together, at least one of the wheels. Thanks for the help a head of time guys.

It's an open differential so if you hold one side the other side will turn. When you turn the drive shaft one side will turn but not both. That's why you do a one wheel peel when you try to burnout with an open differential.

Clux, I'm talking front end. I turn the drive shaft and both turn but, I can hold one from turning and the drive shaft still turns. And I can do this on either side, I haven't tried to hold both at the same time because I don't have enough hands. I'll have to get help to try this. My back work great its just the front.

It doesn't matter front or back, a open differential and will behave the same way.

So you are saying if I hold either side u-joints and turn the drive shaft it should stop turning know matter what side it is? I would think one side should not be able to hold from turning? Right? Front is not limit slip.
