So here is my official “Newbie Post” and only 8 months after I joined this forum! About two days after I joined I purchased a 2000 7.3 Excursion from a dealer in SLC, Utah & drove it back to Denver & have loved it ever since. I grew up around street rods & dirt bikes in the 70’s with my dad and have built several cars & a couple motorcycles along the way. I had a small trucking company for about 3 years in the early 2000’s and drove commercially for about 10 years total. I’ve had some experience with diesels but, aside from my rigs, never owned one. I needed something for my family (wife, 3 kids, & 2 dogs) that we could travel in comfortably but still pull a car trailer on occasion. I’d always liked Excursions so I came here and did some research and began my quest to find a nice one with the 7.3. I found that to be a rather tough task, I can’t tell you how many I didn’t even get to test drive because they sold before I could get there. Then there were the ones that I did see but didn't really want to test drive but figured I’d do it so I could get an idea what I was dealing with. Eventually the cards fell into place, I had a car buddy in SLC who went and drove mine and he gave it the green light so I jumped. I wasn’t really looking for one with so much lift but given the size of Excursions it pretty much works plus I’ve missed being able to see over traffic ever since I quit trucking. I’ve done a few mods, mostly things I knew it needed, but a couple of fun things too. I went with a DP Tuner F5 chip because of the things I read about them, both the chip itself and the company. I’ve got a bigger story to go with that whole experience but we’ll save that except for this, I am hooked on them. Jody went way out of his way to help me and these days that is very rare, I recommend them 100%. New Bilstein 5100’s, an MBRP 4” turbo back exhaust, the 6637 intake mod, 3 gauge A-Pillar pod, and NC Hornet’s CCV mod along with other very minor fixes here and there. I’ve got short list plans to replace all the intake boots, have the intercooler boiled, add a coolant filter, change the upper radiator hose, add some plenum reinforcements along with relocating the driver’s side battery. There are some other items that are on the long range list like interior changes, minor body work, brake upgrades, new up pipes, intake manifold but some of those things require more research before I commit. When I purchased it I found out the tranny had been rebuilt 15k miles before I got it, which now has just over 21k miles on the rebuild. Also, quite shockingly, I found the P.O. had kept complete records of every repair, oil change, & service visit since day one. I’ve already read lots of info on this site, and others, but I know I’ve got much more to learn about owning, maintaining, and updating this unique vehicle. I look forward to reading what some of you write and possibly meeting up some day for the drinks & stories.
