grey smoke, knocking

Question grey smoke, knocking

hi

today after starting the truck it started knocking badly with huge clouds of grey/black smoke.

i ran a contribution test and #3 and #5 showed as failures.

This is a replacement used engine. These injectors were transferred over from the orig engine after being re-ringed. The injectors were new remanned last May and provided good service in the removed engine and did ok for several 100 miles in this engine.


could this be two injector tips breaking at same time or o-ring/installation problems coincidentally occurring in these two injectors?

probably injector orings if they have only been in there 100miles, the injectors may not been torqued right.

hi

prob no more then 200 miles since they were installed in that engine.

today's c/c test showed failure on 3&5. torn o-rings during install or mis-torqued could do this ?

mis torqued could make the orings fail then the smoke and noise will start.

Your video looks and sounds like a split nozzle to me.
This is why I always recommend NEW nozzles with reman sticks.

Tell me if this sounds familiar: All good, then some knocking, then the knocking gets worse, then the bucking when your foot is holding still, then the big knock and smoke.



If this all sounds about right, it's time to play Whack-A-Mole under the VCs.

hi

not really. it sounds exactly like the video i posted tho.

as cold as it is... i am going to pull the v/c tomorrow and have a look. i have extra rings and an injector if i need it.

i got the truck to use with the business but it has been so unreliable that it was only driven a shade over 7k last year. i think the time is coming for a divorce. quite depressed over this thing.

turned out to be a mis-torqued injector which in turn allowed combustion gasses to roast the orange o ring.

That is exactly what my video was. Now you need to watch for combustion gasses or fuel in the degas bottle. I am the resident 'jector jumping jester.

Glad it was something simple. Was your copper washer gone?
That thing must have been really loose to knock so hard, was the hold down bolt trashed?

Oh... I forgot to ask: Did you replace the O-rings? They are usually toast after that kind of torture - I have a closet full of these tee-shirts.

yes.replaced all o rings and copper tip.

found another one,,this time #2 and replaced whole injector.

now...truck wont start at all... just white smoke.

( i have thread listed to that affect.

You can try shorting the large studs on the glow plug relay for about a minute before cranking and see what that does. Click that last link in my signature, it may help.
