Oil change first and a couple questions

I was changing the oil today and the Motorcraft filter I got, the FL1995, had bad threads. It would spin about 1.5 turns and then stop. I figured I better not force it (ah ha! I actually have learned something after all these years!) and went back and got another one. It spun right on no problem. I don't think I've ever had a filter with buggered threads before.

Also, my truck takes a full 16 quarts if you change the filter. I thought it was only 14 - am I crazy or just wrong in my thinking.

Finally, I seem to have a leak near the steering shaft/PS lines. There seem to be two fuel lines there also and I am thinking they are the issue. When I change out to the efuel set up, will those couples go away? You can see them from the inner wheel well, just above the steering shaft and below the PS pump.

Are you positive the leak is from one of the fuel lines?

I was thinking maybe the power steering. It's pretty common to be wet around there.

I've seen buffers threads before Dan, it's definatly inconvenient. Glad you got that resolved! 15 qts seems to be the norm with mine. Although I've only done the oil change twice since I've had the truck.

I'm a little over 15 when I run the big Donaldson filter. 14 when it's a Motorcraft filter.

Mine's actually 14.5 for what its worth. That is just the pan and filter.

Always check the filters before you put them on. I've seen buggered threads, metal shavings in the threads, etc.

14 Is the correct amount. Don't fill to the top of the stick.that's too much.the 14 theoretically should put the level in the middle of the stick.imho you are over filled.
we used to have stupid customers argue with us about us ripping them off at the dealership..we knew how much vehicles required..but they wanted them "full" except that was over full..some people..ugh

now this leak..is it leaking on the ground? what color is. it? It could be fuel,ps,or oil from rail plugs, hpop res,or fuel return line at the front of the head..yea its cold...i can't get motivated either!!!

My 02:

15qts is the amount with a filter change. (if you fill the filter) recommended
The HPOP reservoir and HPO rails don't figure into the change capacity.
If you don't start it and let it circulate, the figure will read high.
Makes sense to me, there are some variables though, the area where you change must be level and I use the donaldson which adds about another quart.
I change my oil once a year, weather it need it or not. I only drive it 2000 - 3000 a year.

That is what i thought but i ran it after the change and it was at the low mark on the stick. It took 2 more quarts, so a full 4 gallons. I guess i could have the wrong dipstick. I'd hate to be the guy with the "little dipstick". Lol....how would i live that down? At least i did have 5 kids!!!!

Yea..14 with the fl1995. That donaldson holds more than the standard filter.

I can.also check the dipstick seal inside the handle.mine was dislodged and on the tube.if yours is wadded up in the bottom of the handle it would hold the stick out thus making u need more oil than really needed.just a thought
