1949 F4 Fender Turn Signal

Here is the turn signal on my front fenders. I took them apart to change bulbs and I realized the gaskets are deteriated and some places non existant. Is there a source for gaskets or is it time for new lights?

Those are not factory. Many trucks have had similar fender indicator accessories added. I would measure the lens diameter (4"?) and find a generic gasket of appropriate size.

They can be cleaned up or you could probably find nicer old ones on eBay. When I was fixing up my 55 F350 I found decent Dietz lamps on eBay. I cleaned them up. Painted the outside black. I painted the inside white. There was a discussion here about that. We discovered that white on the backs reflected more light than silver.

They needed gaskets. I called Dietz. They did not have any. The guy said I should cut gaskets out of thick cardboard like the cardboard on the backs of school tablets. They didn't work the greatest. So I had an idea. I went to a hardware store that sold canning supplies. I bought the rubber rings that seal mason jars. I had to trim them as the outside diameter was a bit too large.

Here are some pics of the turn signals on my F350:
This is the old ones.

I put a double filament socket in them. They came on when the parking lights were turned on. this style of turn signal lamps are called drum lamps due to their resembling a drum.

I bought stainless screws to replace the rusty original ones. And I did buy NOS lenses.

As far as I know, no fender turn signal lamps were factory, all aftermarket.

Current and inexpensive. Will need to swap in some 6V bulbs: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...and-turn-light

Understood.

Keep looking on eBay. You might find good used ones. Or clean yours up.

They look to be in good enough shape to clean up and use. I can't see the other 3 lenses, but if nothing looks worse than we see here, I'd restore them enough to keep using. They're period correct and have a patina that looks like they belong there. If the lenses need a gasket, some thin sheet cork and an exact-o knife should be able to handle that.

Abe, Those NOS signal Stats were a great price. Look like an earlier version too. What I like about them is they are exactly the same size and look exactly like the Dietz made FoMoCo accessories from 51-52 trucks. Honestly the Signal Stats are actually better, easier to change bulbs and find and find parts for.

BBF4, - Get some gasket sheet material, Cork and Rubber combo and just cut your own gaskets out of that. Just a thin gasket sheet is all you need if you want to re-use them. 99% percent of the time these old trucks had Aftermarket turn signals of one make or the other. Signal Stat was probably the most popular Yankee and Teleoptic as well. There were several good manufacturers. Personally I like the earlier ones with the arrow shapes cut out in them.

Abe. From what Ive known and seen, and judging from the box graphics they look to be from the very late forties or more likely early to mid fifties. The earlier fender signals from 30s, 40's tend to use an arrow shape cut out in the lens. Even Ford's Factory turn signals went from "arrows" in 48-50 and then changed to yellow/red- front/rear, full lens in 51-52. I have a pair of NOS Signal Stat units just like this listing only mine are in a box with tell- tale 60's even 70's graphic style on it. They made this style for decades.

I still have the older arrow style Signal Stat units on my trucks fenders. From photos I know they've been on the truck since at least the 80's so I left them on, also I like them better.
