Question Auxiliary Power Port

Anyone have tips for an auxiliary power port that isn't working? The cigarette lighter works, but the power port doesn't, pretty sure they are on the same fuse. I know these things can be temperamental, so I've tried moving the device around inside the port to get a better connection to no avail. The same device (gps) works in the lighter port.

I need to get under dash and check the wiring (I really need to learn how to use a voltmeter) and make sure it's connected okay. Any tips would be helpful.

I don't know what year you have, but don't assume they are on the same fuse, I bet they are not. Do both stay on all the time or does one go on and off with the key? If you list what year and model you have, possibly we can look it up unless it's really new.

Thanks for the reply, the auxiliary port is supposed to stay on all the time. It's a 97 F-350

In 1996 they had separate fuses for the cig lighter and the power port, both in the underdash fuse box. In 1999 they had separate fuses also, the cig lighter fuse in the underdash fuse box and the power port fuse in the underhood fuse box. Sorry, I do not have a 1997 diagram. But it looks like it probably does have a separate fuse.

Awesome, thanks for the help Franklin2. I appreciate it. I'll take a peek under hood and post back what I find. I had assumed they were on the same fuse so I didn't look.

If you go to Auto Zone's web site you can find schematics of your electrical system.....you have to join the site but it's free. Then go digging thru the site....

That's true. But let me give you a little summary; The 1979 through 1993 are pretty lousy. Better than nothing, but they only give you some of the lighting, some of the engine, and possibly the electric windows a locks in some years. The 1990's up to 1999 are about the same, maybe few more diagrams, it's hit or miss.

Now when you get to 2000 it all changes. Very good diagrams, and they are factory style, with connector views, component views, lots of accessory diagrams, entertainment system diagrams, module diagrams, power distribution, most everything. The only thing wrong with these diagrams is some of them are missing(seems like a dead link). But most everything is there.

I would be very surprised if you found any wiring diagram info on the power port in the 97 diagrams at Autozone. But you can't fault them too much, at least they have something out there and they do not charge for it.

I'll try Auto Zone and see what I find. The Haynes manual I have doesn't mention the port anywhere. But it's a general manual that covers quite a few year/models.

Thanks!
