I just finished changing the thermostats and block heater on my 2010 6.4 super duty. does anybody have the procedure for filling the cooling system. I'm filling it through the degas bottle but its not going to fill anything above the lowest point. I have seen a pressure tool for this but $200.00 is a little steep for a tool I will only use once in while.

I didn't have the vacuum filler when I did mine and just filled it the old fashion way, just check it regularly the first week to top off if needed. I let mine idle until the stat's opened, (which took what seemed like forever) topped off and haven't had to add any since.

 

thought that's what I would have to do. Was hoping for a point a wand at it and it would it be done type of method. Old school it is. Thanks.

 

You might see if one of the "Air Lift" type fill tools is available under the tool loan program at your local auto parts places. I believe you will have a difficult time getting all the air pockets purged without one, and in an engine known for cavitation issues, I wouldn't want to do anything that could cause pressure building and cavitation issues.

 

I just bought one on Amazon for 75 bucks. Its a must on the 6.4's.

 

I will be researching that tonite. I saw a couple of them on ebay ranging from 60. to 250. Thanks for the help. -15 or -40 with wind chill. Love winter.(?)

 

Very important to refill coolant using vacuum with the prescribed procedure. Air can stay in the system for a long time resulting in cavitation, and steam which creates hot spots and extreme pressure spots.
