Question Original steering wheel on new aftermarket column?

Hey guys, I was thinking of ordering an aftermarket steering column from summit racing and am wanting to keep my original steering wheel. I have been searching and I can't find an adaptor or anyone who's done it. Does anyone have any info on something like that? Thanks

If your looking at buying and Ididit or Flaming River tilt column they won't accept our trucks original steering wheels. These columns use a splined shaft that accepts 69 and newer GM style wheels. Do a search there are several vendors making reproduction wheels for use on the tilt columns.

You could make your own, that's my plan. Find a junk wheel in a yard for a few bucks and have a shaft welded into it with offset bolt pattern. That's my plan anyhow.

Cut the center out of a GM steering wheel and weld it in place of the existing center, made my smaller diameter caddy steering wheel that fits a GM column that way. A little work and it will be good to go. I used the smaller wheel ring as well but you wouldnt have to.

original huge wheel

gm wheel from a 70s monte carlo

center cut from monte wheel

smaller wheel in progress

duraglass filler

sanded and painted, not show quality but works just fine.

Way too much work, just cut a keyway in the new shaft and the wheel.
15min job.. And maybe the new shaft is a little bigger? Ok do the machining
on the shaft not the wheel. Shafts are easiely made (not a wheel)..

It may be faster but I dont think I would want to machine the splines off a brand new steering column, much less a permanent fix to make a wheel IMO. Then you can still change change steering wheels in the future if you change your mind and want something different.

I don't know about yours but the wheel on my 52 wraps around the outside of the column. All the new columns I've seen the wheel hub sits behind or inside the column. Since I like the look of the original style I am going to modify it as necessary to suit my needs.

dr, that is exactly how I planned to do my wheel. What type of epoxy did you use? I may also narrow the diameter of mine in the process.

No epoxy, all metal welded together and then used duraglass to form the missing pieces. It was what I had on the shelf so I figured if it didnt work I could grind it back out, but it actually worked well. The more time you take shaping it and sanding it the better it will come out. I do not know of the epoxy products would work better or not, I have not tried them.
