check engine light

My check engine light came on the other day. In reviewing the owners manual, it just stated to fill up the gas tank and do 3 "cold to warm" start ups and if this doesn't take care of the problem to take it to the dealer. Does anyone else have any idea on things I can check before taking it in?

Some info:
We had been doing a lot of tree work and I had been pulling a 16' GN dump trailer with only brush when the light came on. All maint is up to date at 29,000 miles. I have noticed on colder mornings the tank doesn't like to take the first couple gallons of gas so I'm thinking it has a plugged vent. This may be the problem.?.

Thanks!!

Make sure that your gas fill cap is on tight (a few clicks) and the seal is still good. That can also trigger the check engine light.
