Oil pans...yeah, you know the drill.

The MN winters have raised a bit of heck with the oil pan on the 2001. It's ok until I proceed with the big project...a cab swap....I sanded it and POR-15 it.

But if I'm going through the work to swap a cab, I'll take the opportunity to install a new oil pan and bellowed uppies.

So, the question.

The Ford pan can be had for ~$220

Rock Auto offers two....Spectra for ~$93 and a Dorman for ~$126

As we all know...huge amount of work, one that I want to do right...once.

I'll be looking at aftermarket coatings for any of them as well.

Opinions on the fit of the Spectra and Dorman?

The morso for sure. I don't trust the materials and quality control of stuff from China. Unless its made to someones exact specs, like Apple, Ford, etc. they just make any old junk at the cheapest price. As for coating it, there are a few options. Powder coating, which is not the end all of coatings, is one. One advantage of it is that it is attracted to the surface due to the positve and negative charges which helps the coating get drawn into tight places. That is not a problem spraying an oil pan. You can media blast it and epoxy prime it which will give it great protection. Both systems could be coated with a bed liner type product over them. The only thing that makes me uncomfortable about bed liner coatings is that any place that is compromised and water gets under it, it will hide that rust, and eventual pitting much more than paint. I would go with epoxy and a yearly coating of Fluid Film. Or maybe an OEM pan and Morso gasket if they work together, and the same coatings.

I'd go with the Ford part and get it LineX'd. There will be no problem with it ever again.

Thats true. I have new rear rotors that are motorcraft with the oval stamped on them, but they are made in China to Fords specs, so hopefully they are of good quality. Hey they landed something on the moon, so they obviously can do it right when they have to. Thats the point, it seems its only when they have to.
