Checking backlash before i replace my rear pinion yoke and im getting a little scared. Is the backlash supposed to feel notchy with the limited slip? If feels like magnet cogging like spinning and electric motor when its off. It feels real notchy. Please tell me i don't need a rebuild!!!
All depends on brakes, hubs etc still in play.when you swap the yoke just tighten the nut back on as tight as you can with a normal 1/2" ratchet.no impacts, braker bars etc. if you tighten excessively you could crush the crush sleve more and increase pinion brg preload.
that will ruin the bearings and rebuild immenent then.a normal ratchet will not give enough leverage to overtighten.
That doesn't sound like backlash you are feeling. Backlash is the gap/play between the pinion and ring gear. Best way to get an idea of how much backlash you have without pulling the cover is to remove the 8 bolts holding the axles in and pull them out a few inches so they disengage from the carrier (have a rag handy because you'll lose a little oil when you pull the shaft out), then rotate the pinion yoke back and forth to where it's just touching the ring gear, but not rotating it. For my $.02, just pull the cover too and give everything a thorough inspection. I'm sure the fluid could use changing anyhow.
Go buy a 10$ dial indicator and magnet mount from harbor frieght and check it instead if guessing. Guessing will get you no wear unless you have been doing these sort of things for years and years.
