Is there a chip in the key?
I went to a local hardware store to get another key made for my 97 F-250 HD. I have two keys, but want a third to keep in the tool box in case I locked my keys in the truck. But they said it had a chip in it, so I would be able to open the doors, but not start it.
And they also said that if I tried to start the truck with that key, I would need to reprogram the computer to use my original key. I have never heard of this before. does this guy just not know, or is it true?
So do any of these trucks actually have a chip in the key?

Go to another key supplier!!! They don't have a clue at the place you went!!!!
They didn't put chips in our keys, the PATS system didn't even start until sometime in the mid 2000s. It seems like I remember the Super duties didn't have them until 2008... I may be off a year or so but still the point is that a 1997 250HD don't use it...

I know my moms 2000 Explorer took a chip key and the 2002 ranger I had took one but only to start the vehicle. I kept a non chip key in my wallet in case I locked my keys in the car but it would not start the truck. I think a few of the cars got them in the late 90s and it stepped across the whole Ford line by the early to mid 2000s
