my 76 swb 2wd dilemma

ive got a 76 f100 2wd, and no title. ive looked into title company that will get me a title but they wanted over 500 bucks. i talked with both Tn & Ky about what to do, they said i need to have owned it for five years before i can apply for a title. i had a cop buddy run the vin for me but couldnt get me the previous owners name or address. do yall have any suggestions?

Well.... do you need to use it for parts or were you planning on driving that thing on the roads?? You can drive it all day in your yard with out a title but once on a public road you're breaking the law. By now the previous owner has long lost the title he may have had at one point. The only way to get a title is through the title company you were talking with or go to your local court house of residence and apply for a lost title. If the VIN comes back stolen, your truck is gone and there isn't anything you can do as you do not want to claim stolen property but that's risk you have to take in a situation like this. More than likely it's not stolen and you'll get your title. Pay the fee if you want the title or use it for a parts truck OR sell it to someone else as a non-titled parts truck and let them fool with it......I'm in E.TN and might would take it off your hands for that matter...

86f250hd, swapping vin numbers on a vehicle is illegal. Don't swap vins, or you risk jail time. Thats almost like stealing a truck.
Just go through the process of getting a title for the truck legaly.

If the truck is impounded buy a towing service , they can " sell " it to you and you can get a title . Paperwork is involved . Not sure on cost . Otherwise , use it for a donor vehicle . All you need is a " truck " with a good title . Take 2 and make a good one .

Looks like it is worth the $500 to get a title for. It has to add over $500 to the value of the truck doesn't it?

Can you not file for a lost/Sheriff's title with the county? I looked into it here for a '64 F100 I had. Basically Sheriff's inspect/run the VIN and fill out some paperwork, you pay the county a few hundred dollars collateral, you get a Bonded title, and if a few years past with no previous owner laying claim to the truck you get a clear title.

Where are you located? Out here in CA we can do a lien sale & get title that way. In that process you have to contact any previous registered owners & let them know the truck is going up for auction & give them the time & date of auction.

Not sure if you have a similar process where you are, but you may. Definitely something to look into.
