Is this a 4x4 4r100? (New pics)

I have a rebuilt 4r100 I bought with out a extension housing. There is 5 5/8" of output shaft sticking out. Can someone please tell me if this is a 4x4 or 4x2. I have searched for over an hour trying to figure it out. I am pulling my trans in another week and want to know this one will work before then.

This is the trans in my truck I pulled the tcase and it does for on the new trans but there is this Hall effects ring on my output shaft. The new trans doesn't have this. Could the new one be a e4od?
Or does it press off the shaft and I can put it on the new one.

If you could get some pictures of the back end of the trans we may be able to help you out better... I'm no trans guy but I'm sure one will be along soon...... Mark..... Lol

without a picture of the back of the trans, no one can give you a definite answer besides maybe it will work, maybe it won't.

Thanks guys I uploaded pics and took my tcase off last night. The last bottom two casting numbers are not the same though the old trans in my truck ends in 98 the replacement in 97. What does this mean? And will I be able to swap the speed sensor onto the new output shaft without pulling the shaft?

Measure the extension housing that's in your truck right now. Then I might be able to figure this out.

The casting numbers are probably the number of the die that cast that part. It doesn't mean anything useful.

From the best I can measure with it in the truck my current extension housing measures 4 5/8.

My tcase fits on the new trans and is the right distance.

My main concern now is the tone wheel on my output shaft for the rear sensor on top of the extension housing. Both output shafts seem to be the same aside from this. I know the trans won't work right without it. Does this tone wheel press on and off the shaft or is it part of it? Also does anyone know where I can buy one?

I found an output shaft with the time wheel for about 60 I'm gunna buy and see if I can get the tone wheel off, or at least have a sample and I'll have a press on one machined.

Yes, the tone wheel is pressed on. A Rotunda 307-388 spacer is used to set the distance between the tone wheel and park gear. Taking a measurement, and careful pressing, you could install it without the spacer.

We already know that I don't know anything about transmissions. But I have a question.

When having my van converted from oem 2wd to aftermarket 4wd, I was told that I had to compromise with installing a BW1356 transfer case (now ruined for the second time) because the 2wd speed sensor was on the transmission while the F series had the speed sensor on the driver's side rear wheel (one other reason I want to go from the semi-floating axle to the full floating F series rear axle - so I can use a NV273 transfercase) and the BW1356 transfer case had the speed sensor on the tail housing (which the NV273 didn't).

So, my question out of curiousity, is the "tone wheel" of which you are speaking part of the speed sensor? If so, is your speed sensor on the transmission or on the rear axle?

If I remember correctly there's 2 speed sensors in the 4R100 transmission, used to determine transmission slip for the PCM. The speed sensor for the speedometer and ABS is on the differential.

Thanks clux. My 2wd E Series differential has the ABS speed sensor. But the other speed sensor for the transmission was on the tail piece for the transmission and is now on the weak BW1356 transfer case tail piece.

Tim, I don't know anything about the e series in particular but on the 4x4 4r100 has the sensor on the front top left on the input and the rear sensor for the PCM to read the trans is on top the extension housing which is the adapter for the transfer case, which you would be able to bolt up the stock np271. On the trucks the speedometer and abs is picked up off the rear differential.

That is good news. Should make it easier to hook up a NV transfer case. I wonder if I misunderstood the 4x4 converter. But I have heard the same thing from another respected 4x4 converter (UjointOffRoad.com). So there may be a nuance which I did not understand. Regardless, I will cross that bridge when I get to it. Good luck on your new transmission!
