Is there something I can put on my steps and sidewalk besides salt that will melt or keep snow/ice away? I researched the dish soap/water/rubbing alcohol idea and it seems to not work so well. The main reason I want to do this is because salt seems to bother my dog's feet. thanks for the ideas!!
I don't use salt on my concrete, as it does eventually weakens and puts holes in the surface. I've used sand, but it's more for traction, when the water on my porch freezes over.
I don't have an ice melter idea, but some kind of crushed gravel might offer better traction and last longer than sand. Something rougher than pea gravel. Once it freezes in place I'd think it would last a while.
Though, if you have water dripping on your steps when things start thawing then re-freezing that's a pain. That happens here on the front steps and we've been putting a pile of rock salt down right there. Other than that, the best thing is to let it load up with ice then chip it off every so often. Not easy, but no other way around it.
