When you say wont start do you mean it wont turn with the starter or it turns but wont fire?
If it wont turn...could be starter or wires or even timing to far advanced.
If it turns over but wont start...do you have spark? if not could be the coil or the ignition module.
Or do you have spark but no fuel ?? if no fuel could be fuel line getting too hot and "vapor locking".
Or maybe the fuel is boiling out of the carb and flooding the engine...try holding the pedal to the floor and see if it starts.
Hope this gives a few ideas, if you tell us more of the symptoms we can be of more help
I still vote for timing but...check and make sure the battery + wire to the solenoid, the starter wire from the solenoid to the starter and the battery - wire have clean tight connections and the wires arent frayed/ corroded.
Also make sure the wires are large enough...I like to run doubled 6awg for all of them. Gives the starter as much oommpphh as it needs
i had the same problem on my 400. i put in a high torque mini starter from summit racing ($160) and wraped some insulation around it and it works great now.
I'd bet dollars to pesos the starter is getting too much heat from the exhaust.
As I stated in another post, I had the exact same problem and installed a piece of aluminum between the starter and y-pipe. It made a definate difference, but I could still use more insulation.
Maybe try some of that header wrap around the exhaust near the starter.
