1979 F250 Brake Caliper H Block

Hello All,

My '79 f250 4x4 started making a steady clunking/clicking on the front end by the driver side wheel that I noticed when coasting to a stop. Happens all the times and when I took the wheel off I noticed the disc brake caliper has almost a 1/4" play vertically. I see that the H block on the bottom of the caliper allows the caliper to slide side to side and the spring (arched flat piece of metal) resting inside this block takes up the vertical play. I purchased a new set of H blocks and springs and installed them but there is still probably 1/8" play vertically. Any ideas if there is an oversize kit for these H-blocks or springs if the sliding surface on the actual caliper mount location has worn down? If not, maybe a do it yourself remedy that anyone has found works ok? It is a Dana 44 dual piston caliper. Thanks a lot.

Odd problem but I have heard of it before. What caused it I and the truck owner did not know either, but I ended up getting him a new/used caliper bracket.

Maybe you can weld a tab to make the spring thicker, but then it won't flex and let the caliper float. Maybe make the space/gap smaller or narrower that the spring goes in?

For safety sake just get a new/used caliper bracket and go from there. IMO modifying the front brake system is not the best idea.

I am not trying to sale you one, just advice you to be safe and smart about it, that's all.

You can install 2 springs cut the curved ends off one this will take up the slop sounds like your caliper and caliper mounting brackets are very worn

Thanks for the replies, I think I will just get new caliper brackets. Seems like you can get them pretty cheap anyways. I hope that it is the caliper bracket that is worn and not where the h block mounts. I guess all of the sliding occurs between the bracket and the inside of the h block so those are the two pieces that should technically wear out. Thanks again.

I had to buy caliper brackets for my F250 and remanufactured calipers. Someone had welded up the caliper brackets and ground them back due to the huge amount of wear.
