4.6 mpg improvements what to bolt on ?

I have a 2001 F150 supercrew and looking to improve gas mileage and performance. It has 355 gears and gets 15 mpg with mixed driving . Is this normal mpg? Will exhaust and intake help? If so can you recommend anything? Thanks Brad West

Sounds like good MPG!

My dad's with 5.4 Screw 4x4 off road with intake, headers, and strait pipes only gets 10-11 (Kind of hard to keep ur foot out of it ) Highway driving thought it gets 16-17, about 2 better than stock.

If you add an intake, headers, and strait pipes, your engine will run better, be more responsive, and get better MPG.

Thanks for the info. I didnt know if 15 mpg was average for this truck. I plan on adding a K&N filter and what type of exhaust is still a question. I dont want it too loud but I do like the throaty sound of a V-8. Thanks Brad West

I tried the Helix tb spacer.
It added 2mpg but the throttle response went to hell.
I have it just sitting in a box on the shelf now.

Try a K&N FIPK(some people hate them here) and an aftermarket muffler. That helped my 302 a lot.

Brad;

15 mpg is about right for a 5.4, I get about 350 miles to a full tank (easy driving). Towing about 2000 lbs I get around 12 to 13. I actually took the truck for its first long ride (1200 miles). The first 50 miles was 55 - 60 mph and through about 5 towns. The next 500 miles was at 65 -75mph through the hills of Pennsylvania down to Virginia and I averaged a bit over 18 mpg which I was shocked. The only mod I have is a Gibson 3 inch single exhaust. I am not sure that matters but the truck stays in overdrive much longer.

The only prob with adding all that extree stuff is that is gives you better perf. and you drive faster and crazier and you still end up with the same mileage if not worse...

chech out project MPG (just search the web) they thought an insulated airbox and line with k&n filter was much better than a FIPK (and cheaper)

Just put some header wrap on your headers to cool the engine bay. And BAM!!! You got "Cold AIr Induction". 20 bucks will get it done. This will help your mpg. Doulbe that with a K&N, and flowmaster/borla, and keep your foot off the gas, you should save big-time at the pump. In my opinion, flowmaster is louder, but borla sounds better in a constant rumble.

About 4 things will improve mileage and also get you some much needed power on your SuperCrew.

1) Air Intake Kit (K&N and Airaid are my choices)

2) Flowmaster or Gibson Cat-Back Exhaust System

3) Superchip or Superchip Microtuner

4) Throttle Body Spacer (Poweraid)

These are all things I have planned or am in the process of doing to my own 4.6L. These are the least invasive add-ons and don't require a mechanic's knowledge.
