Do you have the rear controls mounted in the headliner?
This sounds to me like the rear heater assembly's blend door is stuck in "cooling" mode. With your interior this means you'd have gain access to that assembly and make sure that door operates properly.
The rear heater assembly is just one piece, contains both A/C evaporator for the rear as well as the heater core, also rear.
If you're getting warm air from the bottom vents and cooler air up top that's probably not right. I did ask if you had the overhead rear control for the heating cooling?
Only control is on the dash.. When set to HEAT and HOT, I get hot air from front floor and rear floor.... When set to VENT and HOT, I get Hot air from front vents and Cool/cold (ambient temp) air from rear ceiling vents.... Not sure if this is normal... I guess my question is >>> Are the rear ceiling vents only for AC ... and does the rear area heat only from the floor ?? I was hoping someone with this set up could tell me how theirs works.
Aha. I'm not alone. New to the forum, but have this same issue w/ a 2012 E-350 SD wagon. Hot front, cold ceiling..not to mention horrible rattle in the ceiling like the ducts have come loose beneath the liner. Rig at the shop on warranty work as I type and will add that to the list of things to check as I'd thought that was 'normal', but apparently not.
Please be so kind as to let me know what the fix is for this when you get your truck back.... I trying to find out if this was normal .. The owner manual does not address this at all..... I was thinking that the ceiling vents were only for Venting Ambient air or AC..
Just to re-state my case >> When the Selector control set to Floor(HEAT) and Temp on hot, I get hot air in front and in rear from floor vents.....When selector is set to VENT and temp set to HOT, I get hot air from front dash vents and ambient temperature air from rear ceiling vents.
The answer is simple people, the rear heat is in the floor, the ac is in the ceiling, when you have the front set to vent, the rear blows through the ceiling, which IS the ac side, turn the rear OFF if you insist on this setting! Sure the dash system has dual setting but you need to realize the rear is 2 separate systems operated by one fan.
Thanks for this post! I just got a 2013 E350. I was wondering the same thing as the heat blows from the floor but not the ceiling. I checked a buddy's 08 van. Same thing, heat from the floor only, but I was still skeptical. You saved me a trip to the dealership.
I havent tried the opposite yet, AC from the floor...
Floor will always blow heat, you will also find the temp control up front has nothing to do with the rear either, so when the van gets hot inside, and you adjust the control so the front/dash register blows cooler air, the rear remains hot, you have to either turn the fan down or off, goes for ac also. I keep my van cold in the summer by cutting the front down, leaving the rear on low, but when a passenger is back there, they don't like it, the rear is like a freezer.
Remember, floor is heat, ceiling is ac, fan is high, medium, low, or off, the only system the temp control operates is the dash up front.
I've had my van 11 years, I have it figured out, but have gotten the bad vacuum canister issue now, reverting my unit to default, which is defrost, meaning regardless of the dash setting, when the engine ceases to pull vacuum, when under throttle the front blows of the windshield, and the rear blows heat on the floor, which is frustrating in the summer.
