I think I broke an axel

well I was messing around in the truck on the street in first gear and I got some wheel hop and then I heard a loud crack! Now the truck doesn't move when I put it in gear. I was able to drive it home by putting it in 4 wheel drive. Once I got it home I put it in first gear and the truck doest move but the drive line spins and makes some very bad noises while it does haha. Think it's an axel or rear end?

well since it says u have a f100.... id say........ u killed the spiders.... as if the axle was broken the axle would've slid out still bolted to the rim

On a Ford 9-inch? I doubt it. The axles are held in with a plate which in turn keeps the pressed-on bearings in place. Generally, the only way it could slide out as described is if the axle breaks on the outboard side of the bearing or a sheared bearing which allows the axle to slip off.

...spiders, sheared pinion teeth, or ring gear teeth. Time to open 'er up and take a peek.

I will be sure to post some pics. Maybe even a video of the blender with marbles sounds. Do these f100 's have posi? What would be the best way to tell what axel is broken?

It is probably not an axle shaft but you will know when you take it apart.
I'm betting on the Traction-Loc clutches letting go.

Posi is a gm term but I know for a fact my 76 f150 has a 9" that locks up in just about one tire rotation, so you could say it has a Posi. I don't know if the f100s do though.

I believe for a 9" you have to pull the axles out first, meaning remove all the rear brake stuff and plate that HIO is talking about.

Then the center chunk (carrier housing) from the front, it does not have a rear dif cover like a Dana 60.

You will see whats broke once you get it out, pic are mandatory at this point.

The axles can be withdrawn without removing the brakes. Four retaining bolts (nut side) are accessed through a hole on the axle flange. 'Only has to be withdrawn about 10 inches or so to clear the center section, indicated by a telltale "clink".

A center section can be swapped in as little as one hour.

You 1/2 ton folks have is so easy, I was kinda guessing. I have pulled a 9" axles before, a friend needed all the rear brake stuff and the CENTER CHUNK 4/11 posi.

Then I pulled the front R&P out for him, cause his was stripped.

Here are the pictures. Looks like the clutches and bearing cap shattered. What do you guys think? What should I buy to fix this?

I might need to get everything that can drop in to my center section. Clutches are gone, bearing cap, etc.

This might help to determine what parts I need.

I think I would just buy another axle and swap center section. It would be a lot quicker,

My axel ended up being fine. Looks like this is what I might need. Does this look about right guys? I'm not trying to spend a lot of cash.
