Help me with this annoying EBPV

Ok long story short i had the turbo off over the weekend and when i put it back on all the sudden i can hear the EBPV making a wooshing sound in the cab on light pedal acceleration. This has become very annoying and i didnt hear anything before the turbo was put back on. What can i do to fix this without pulling the turbo? Is the EBPV only for the stock high idle feature or something else? I like the feature but may be willing to eliminate it if i need to to get rid of the sound. Oh and i put a wicked wheel in the turbo as well, would this have affected it in any way? Thanks

Wicked wheel would not affect it.

Wooshing noise is only generated when the EBPV is closed which means that something is backwards if it is closing off when you press on the accelerator. Pressing the accelerator is supposed to release and open the EBPV... not close it.

The EBPV is there to help your engine warm up under a certain set of ambient and engine conditions (exhaust temperature, ambient air temperature, and oil temperature), and only then - unless it has been modified to operate as a manually activated exhaust brake.

Wooshing at the tailpipe is EBPV. Wooshing in the cab is turbo suction/blowing. You might want to verify your air intake and boots are all sealed up tight.

Well, the discussing the location of the sound can almost get into semantics, just depending upon how different people hear things differently. I can actually hear the whooshing in the engine bay as the butterfly valve closes off, and it almost sounds like its coming from the passenger side of the cabin when in fact it's originating from the other side of the firewall in nearly the center of the cab (width-wise, that is). That said, I can understand how it could be the EBPV whooshing.

HOWEVER, you bring up a great point, Rich. It makes a whole lot more sense that it would be a boot leaking by when he hits the accelerator as opposed to having something backwards on the EBPV.

Oh... I forgot. My cab is pretty quiet and I can't really hear the EBPV unless the window is down. I have to keep remembering that not all members have the same effects in their cabs.

Well i really didnt touch the EBPV when the turbo was off so i cant think something got put on backwards. And when i mean light acceleration its more of the "dead" area of the pedal. Like the first 1/2 inch of travel where if really isnt accelerating. It will also do it when im crusing and a light speed where im barely on the pedal. When i push it a little further it will quit and when i let off completely it will quit. To me it doesnt sound like a boost leak but i did do the up pipes so maybe the babies butt isnt quite tight? Thats about the only thing else i could think. The truck seems a lot quieter since the pipes have been done other than this annoying wooshing sound

How does it run?

Did you re-check all of your connections?

The EBPV works up till the oil or coolant, don't remember which, hits 120 degrees normally.

Are you hearing this sound at idle? Normally the EBPV releases when you step hard on the pedal. It does make noise though at first, at least till it opens.

It runs good, and builds good boost. And the only time i hear it at idle is when it goes into high idle but other than that i dont hear it. Maybe it is slightly normal but i never heard it before so its a bit annoying now.

I unplugged the wires going to the solenoid that works the EBPV on my 02. Some folks use wire and tie it open along with unplugging it, but I never did that. My 99 still has it plugged in.

I assume the sounds goes away once warmed up? What you described above is how the EBPV works. It could be that before the leaks were fixed, the EBPV was forcing the exhaust out the leaks making the leaks more noticeable and not hearing the exhaust being pushed around the valve. I'm not a good judge when it comes to listening to videos, but I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary.

Something else to consider, the EBPV doesn't kick in unless it's around 30 degrees. In warmer weather, you'd never hear it cause it's never activated. I know the first time I heard it on my 1st 7.3, it caught me off guard.
