Knock in engine 90 bronco (full size)

Guys - I'm a member from the antique truck section - but I'm looking to trade one of my 4wheelers for a 90 bronco.

The paint is junk & its very rusty - but he says it has 123k miles & it has been very well maintianed - fresh oil every 3k etc.

He said one day it wouldnt start - so he replaced the coil & ICM & finally determined it was a relay.

He said he then "had" to reset the timing & it was running fine. Shortly after he got a periodic "knocking" - he was told it was a rod, but he isn't sure.

I'm headed up to check it out tomorrow - anyone heard of timing causing a knock?

Sounds like I need a new bearing on at least 1 rod.

Only time timing causes a knock is under load... even then it ain't really a knock, nor does it sound like one. It's called spark knock... but it actually sounds like glass marbles rattling around.

Try looking at the harmonic balancer... sometimes the outer ring comes loose and flops around.

When does this "periodic" knocking happen?

ah - good point

I was talking to a guy a few weeks ago he said he had a knock & was able to replace the bearing with an oversize bearing & retorque everything & he was back on the road.

If the engine is totally ragged then its not worth the trade (total rebuild) but if I can drop the pan & change the bearings I dont think it will be a bad deal.

the quad is old but runs perfect & wicked fast (too fast for me) & I'm looking for a good 4x4 winter/hunting truck. But if I need to be $1000 into it its a waste - there are plenty of others out there.

Think about it.... the ONLY way to put oversize bearings in, is to put a crankshaft that has been reground for that size bearing..... If he slapped oversize bearings on the old crank shaft, it ain't gonna last!!!! If the crank wasn't worn enough to allow for the oversize it would have bound up when it was torqued..... and if it didn't bind up that means the crank is worn, probably out of round, and rough as a cob!!!!

Sounds like a lot of BS to me, I would run away like the wind!!!
