Exhaust leaks are more common and can smell like fuel. I had a Leak on my fuel
Pressure regulator, would be a good place to check.

Fuel regulator leak^^^^^

I had to replace the fuel pressure regulator "o-ring" myself. An inspection mirror showed me my leak.

Upgrade to the blue spring kit. If you already have the blue spring then all you need is the o-ring. I had fuel smell too and when I did the blue spring upgrade it went away. Make sure you don't overtighten those bolts!

How to video below:

If that's where your leak is (or even if not) here's the info on the fuel pressure regulator parts:
Blue Spring

Upgraded fuel pressure regulator kit (with cover): Ford#3C3Z-9T517-AG IH #1843065C98
Fuel Pressure Regulator "Spring and Reseal Kit Only" (no cover, should be much cheaper, has gasket): Ford#6E7Z-9C165-B IH#1854267C94
Regulator cover gasket only: Ford#3C32-9C065-AA

It's a factory update (not a mod) that will increase fuel pressure to factory spec if it low. Many of the old springs are weak and fuel pressure is low which is hard on fuel injectors. An added benefit is the kit come with the gasket to fix a leaking regulator cover and it's inexpensive. Available at from your local Ford parts man or look online for bigger savings, many vendors stock them. Easy to install. There is a thread in the Tech folder with pictures and several youtube videos with details. You won't need the kit with the cover unless yours is cracked - which is pretty rare.

I had a pretty strong diesel fuel smell both inside and outside of the cab. It would take a few minutes after starting up. It started just after having both fuel filters replaced at the dealer (that and other reasons have me NOT wanting to use the dealer service dept. any more). I looked and looked for a leak in the engine compartment, under the drivers door and anywhere between the fuel tank and the engine compartment - no luck. Finally I gave up and had a local garage look for the leak when the truck was in for another problem. I will give this guy credit. He did not give up (like me). He finally saw the engine mounted fuel filter cover "sweating" diesel. He replaced the cover and I have not smelled diesel for about a month now.

Hey everyone, I'm smelling fuel very strong at a standstill. Notice a lot of moisture around FPR and it's too dark to investigate until tomorrow. Question I have is I replaced my alternator last week and now this new problem. Is there a connection? Not very smart with engines, just wondering.

^^^ Fully charged!! Discovered a puddle of diesel on the driveway! Looks like the blue spring mod is in order, I'm sure the seal went out, are these blue spring kits available at the dealer, or do I need to special order?

Dealer, although they are cheaper from autonation ford on fordparts.com, but you have to pay shipping. If it's the only thing you're buying, might be cheaper local dealer.

Don't forget IH. They have prices that beat Fords all over the place.
