depends. Ranger gas: 20mpg, Ranger Diesel: 40mpg ( i might be a bit generous on ranger mpgs... just sayin..)

if you assume 12000 miles per year, that's 600 gallons (assuming 3.25/ gal)- so $1950/yr, vs 300 gal (assume $4/gal)- so $1200/yr. That's $750/yr.

How much does a swap cost? The goal would be to find a donor car that's been smashed for roughly $1500. But you should be able to sell off the parts you aren't using to make that near zero- It just takes time.

In the guy that did ranger swap did that. He figured these costs:

$260..intercooler and hoses, bends, MAP adapter
$70....fuel pressure regulator
$125...fuel system hoses, hardware, etc
$40....steel for mounting brackets
$150..aluminum driveshaft, shortened, balanced (also included was resurfacing of flywheel)
$350..timing belt kit
$150..PD150 intake with racepipe
$25....misc exhaust pipe
$100..wiring supplies (tape, connectors, solder)
$260..Beetle cooling system (condensor, radiator, fans)
$35....used 4L starter
$1565 total.

That doesn't include the adapter plate. Let's add a grand for that, and round up a bit...

If we make that $3000 even, that's a 4yr payback period- or less if you drive more miles. Plus, we all know a diesel ranger would be way more fun to drive.

Wouldn't it make more sense both financially and time wise to adapt the vehicle to the whole engine, drivetrain, and wiring harness rather than worry about ALL that other custom set up stuff? That just doesn't make sense in my head.

Good morning Jay.

Power came back on at 11:15 last night. Almost everyone on the street had no power too.

What company has produced a 4cyl diesel, crew cab 4x4 pickup, and made it available in the US?

Answer: no one.

who has made a 4 cyl, diesel 4x4 and shipped it to the US?

Ans: No one.

The easiest thing to do, is take a 4cyl diesel, mate it to the vehicle's manual transmission/drivetrain (via adapter plate). Integrate the electronics, and bam. done. (very similar to the ranger build)

So, I started searching what small trucks have a 4x4 4 door crew cab and a manual transmission available?

s-10/sonoma, tacoma, frontier.

Do I really want to drive a chevy? no...NO... NO...

So the frontier... can't get gearing low enough to keep the rpms down. MPGs won't be produced here

and to the tacoma. the taco. I don't like them, but better than a chebby. crew cab long box exists- but not with the manual trans. manual trans is in the reg cabs mostly. But, they are available.

I figure it would be about a $3500+tacoma project. Ideally find one with a blown trans/motor...
