Is it "popping and banging at 2,000" or "knocking" at 3000 rpm?

Next time you have the cap off, take a breaker bar and rock the crank back and forth while watching the rotor.
If you have a sloppy timing chain it will make that emissions retarded '70's cam timing all the worse.

The chain will flail around in the case and throw the ignition timing off.

A straight up set seemed like 20 free HP to me.

It WAS popping and banging at 2,000 and now with the tune up it seems to be only knocking badly at 3000.

So, new coil.
Is it intended for DSII?
(my opinion of Accel products, and Mallory too, is pretty poor since Prestolite moved everything to China)
But it's new. I doubt it is at fault.

Stop throwing parts at the truck and do some diagnosis.

Are the wires still arcing?
Has the damper slipped and the marks are off?
Is the distributor shaft tight?
Is the timing chain tight?
Have you ohm'd out the ignition pickup? (450-900 across orange & purple wires)
The distributor ground? (near 0 black wire to block)

All simple stuff to check.
There's nothing complicated about a DSII 460 engine.

So I got the upgraded cap and adaptor from napa and it hits the water neck.

Anybody know of a water neck that is low enough to clear the cap?

Finally got the carb back from Holley and the ds2 and timing chain all checked out as "normal"

The new carb cap 8mm plugs and exhaust gaskets and I'm hoping it willrun like new.

Just wish it didn't get so dark so soon! Damn you DLST!

Wow, I'm so sorry to have given you bad advice!

In looking back at the two pictures I can now see the difference.
In that V10man's neck has no indentation for bolt clearance, and it is a bit shorter.

No way! Not bad advice, you just didn't know the full story. The high output and the tiny cap was playing hell with the spark. The cap is a must have and the water neck is easy to replace. Just on a good old fashioned parts goose chase. Just want this nipped in the bud.

I'm just hoping working on the manifolds won't be a case too. Lol.

It looks like you have both ports in that thermostat housing plugged.
But I can't tell from the closeup if you need a 90* or a 45* outlet.

I know the later EFI engines have no sensors there.
Let me see what I can find in the aftermarket that isn't some fancy chrome billet one.

I'm going to assume an older engine has the 90* thermostat housing.

NAPA has this 90* neck that is cut away for clearance on that side for $11.

#BK6051090

Amazon has a chrome Trans Dapt O-ring style for $18.41

TD #9415

And any major chain store should have the very similar Spectre 4734 for around $17

I'm not big on O-ring housings, but these two look like they are shorter and should have more room than yours.

I would stay away from Mr.Gasket.
Those have a reputation for poor quality and breaking off the ears.

One bell housing pattern, one distributor, one water pump?
I know you don't have to think a lot when building a bow tie.

Is that NAPA # going to work for you, or do you need one that sticks up at 45*?

I got the water neck and it fits great. Waiting on a set of Taylor wires to come in. Forgot about the long weekend.
And most likely with the broken exhaust bolts im going to rebuild the engine myself. If I have to take it down to the heads I might as well put in new bearings and balance it. Hoping it can be done for 1100 bucks.

. Champion RV19YC plugs are hotter and resist oil fouling much better in older engines... they're also "Made in USA" again now, so much better quality than the junk plugs Champion had been making in Mexico for a long time! I was lucky to get a week out of Motocraft 25 plugs... new wires should not allow spark jump...

Wow what a difference! Slapped the new Holley 600 on with some Taylor wires and she runs as smooth as butter. Needs some tuning, and timing.

Slapped some RVT red on the manifold and only 4 bolts and the difference is night and day.

funny how bad the quality gets in low light

Note only one bolt per cylinder haha.

Congratulations.
That is a pretty engine.

Don't run it like that too long or the manifolds will want to warp.

That first pic looks like your coil wire is going to #7.
I don't think I've ever seen a truck with the coil facing the firewall.
