I was going to do shocks on my 96v f350 4x4 (they are original now) and was just wondering if anyone had any input on what kind to buy or not to buy. I might try to get into dealer shocks if the price is reasonable (I get a roughly 30% discount on dealer parts from a friend's shop) but if not probably autozone. Any opinions?
I've been very impressed with the KYB Monomax shocks. I've been running them on the rear of my F150 for ~25K miles now. I previously ran a pair of Edelbrock Performer shocks in the rear, which lasted all of a few thousand miles before completely failing to dampen the suspension. The Monomaxes have done an excellent job of controlling the rear axle, most noticeably in "washboard" situations.
I've run a set of four Gabriel shocks on the front axle for the past ~35K or so, and they do the job. There are better shocks out there, but the Gabriels are pretty decent for their price point, IMO.
I'll second that. I have them on my F350, and I think they are great.
I have the KYB monomax on my F150, and I'm not sure they are much better than stock. They are great at low speed and minor bumps or road imperfections, but at higher speed and larger undulations, they don't seem to do the job (ie, I get too much bounce or wallow over in the front end for me, especially towing).
You can't go wrong with Bilsteins, especially if you're looking for a smoother ride. That being said, I run KYB Monomaxes on my truck. They ride a bit stiffer, but I prefer that.
