Vin location on a 51/52 f8

I was looking for a motor and ran across a 49 f5 and a 51/52 f8
Can some one tell me where the vin would be on the f8. They do not have a title

Chris,

The VIN should be on a tag riveted to the firewall on the passengers side. The truck is a '52.

Here are the pictures of the F-8. Looks like it does have the Five Star cab. It's interesting where the battery compartment is located. I thought only the COE trucks had them under the cab, next to the running board.

Disagree with you, Bob. Starting in late '51, and then also in '52, the firewall tag was eliminated. The only two VIN locations would be the passenger side frame rail and glove box plate. Stu

Stu, you're the '51-52 expert, at you know a lot more than I do about them. What about the battery location? Did all the big trucks have them there in the later years? I know the '48-50 F-7 or 8 firetruck cab I have on my F-2 didn't have the battery there.

Is anything easy in Flatland? It might be fairly easy if you know who to talk to $$$$

Stu is right about the vin tag being eliminated on the cowl. I had a 48-50 F8 once and it had the battery in the usual location inside the engine compartment.

If you look at the engine, it's not a 337 flathead. So, there may not have been room in the engine compartment for the battery.

Bob - all I can go on are the part numbers. All V8 trucks (C-QH) from 48-51 used the standard tray #7RC 10732-C. The 52 OHV Big Jobs (Q and QH) used #2QC 10732-A. What the difference is I can't say. Someone will bring pictures I hope.

Chris - bonded title in Ill-annoy is a giant p.i.t.a. I have one that needs it. I've been to the SOS three time on other title transfers, asked about my truck needing bonded title, and got blank stares each time. I need to just be a jerk I guess and speak to an administrator. The political hacks that staff the counters aren't up to doing anything beyond routine stuff. The part that has me stumped is getting an appraisal from an acceptable authority. I have a buddy who is a shop owner in town and is trying to get title to two Vietnamese motor scooters and is having the exact same appraisal issue. Maddening. Stu

Check Hemmings for "certified" appraisers. They may be able to work off pictures.

I've got the name of a guy in the Chicago area that is certified. He advertises in the EFV8 Club's V8 Times magazine. But the truck I'm sitting on is the '51 Ranger, and I'm leery of getting some over the moon estimate of value since the truck is really just a rough old cob. Stu

I personally wouldn't give more than a few bucks over scrap for the F-8. I think you can get more than scrap for it parts wise but there's cost for your time and fuel for it. The guy has I on his truck sales lot. I am assuming his main business is selling newer still useable trucks to people who use them for business. I'd bet this beast has been sitting in his lot for some time. He really has to find the exact person who wants a truck like this and is willing to pay to have it hauled away. Ilya had a truck like this for quite some time. Ask him about it.

It's true. I had a 49 F8 (with a 51 front end) with air brakes. It had the 337 flathead. I think I paid around $700 for it, delivered. A year or so later, I sold it for $800-900.

The guy in the red shirt was the PO. His friend had the white truck. I was taking pictures.

I'd say this F-8 gets both pluses and minuses for the OHV V8. It's got more power, but it's as much an orphan engine as a 337, I bet parts are scarce and $$$.

Personally Chris, I think you'd be better off looking for a '56-up big truck, if you're going to use it for work. Much better engine options.
