What speaker dimensions are in a 96 f250 xlt crew cab? Im going to replace front and rear and ive seen a few people say different things and want to know what will work best. Any suggestions on speakers would be helpfull also.

 

have you pulled off the panels to look at em? they should be 6.5's in the door and the rear should be 6x8, you could make 6x9 work tho... Pull all the panels that have speakers sbould just be some plastic pop rivets and screws then you'll know exactly how many... Should be a piece of cake, I mean I can take my interior apart (dash excluded) and put it back together in an hour. As for brand you might laugh at this but its serious.. Goto walmart, and the Scosche HD speakers are really good for the price.. I've had mine for a year know and the quality is incredible for the price.. They can handle a beating and have built in tweeters... If you don't trust them then grab some kickers.. (also at walmart) my walmart carries kicker amps, subs and speakers and nothing will beat that for the price, the choice is yours bud..

 

no i havent yet. I dont want to take anything apart until i got the speakers and Kicker is a brand i was thinking of getting. Do i need to run a amp for the speakers or will a aftermarket deck be fine?

 

The door's are 6.5", BUT the cutout diameter is only 5". Keep that in mind. If you buy a set of 6.5's and find that they don't fit flush tot he door, you may have to trim the opening in the door a little larger. I had to with the Focal's I'm running due to their 5.5" cutout diameter. As stated above, the rears should be 5x7/6x8. Both fit there just fine. I opted for adapters and 6.5's in the rear as well.

As for speakers, it depends on how you plan to power them, how much you want to spend and how much custom work your willing to do. If your going off the head unit, just grab a set of coaxial speakers. And they don't have to be expensive ones either because they will be seeing a very small amount of power coming from the factory or aftermarket headunit. However, if you plan to run them off of their own amp, component set all the way. The difference in sound quality is night and day.

This was not cheap, but the sound quality is GREAT, has nice mid's, clean high's and plenty of lows (bass) for my cab layout.

 

not trying to toot my own horn but Evan and I are probably the most audio inclined so any help with that don't be afraid to ask.. I have my speakers running of my head unit, and then 3 10" kicker cvt's behind the seat... So if you have the cash ma just go all out, you can make your truck be a driving studio, my single cab as great acoustics.. Post pics, we will gladly walk you through everything... as far as clearance for the scosche 6.5's mine fit great you just cant use the fancy covers scosche gives you

 

So what excactly do you mean when you say the speakers wont be flush and you'll have to trim the door?

 

I think he was referring to them hitting the speaker grille that's in the door panel, it all depends on how thick the speaker is, but let him answer for sure

 

I found the mounting ring would not sit flush with the door skin, not the panel. The speaker basket diameter was larger then that of the hole in the door.

The basket is everything rearward of the mounting surface. Shown in this picture.

 

Ok now i understand. So to fix that you just trim it? Are the mounting holes the same or do you have to drill new ones?

Yep, I just trimmed the hole to make it a little bigger. As for new screw holes, I used self tapping metal screws and just lined the speaker up level and ran in new screws.

 

Speakers that will fit perfectly in the openings of the crew cab without redrilling or anything: Polk db651s in the front, db571s in the rear - and they're marine rated so when water gets in the door they don't get ruined. :P. The latter fit the weird Ford 6x8 perfectly, as they were designed to - most 5x7s fit the '6x8' holes just fine, as for most purposes it's the same thing.

I have installed the Polk db651s speakers in both my '87 trucks front doors. Also in my 2011 Tundra front and rear doors. And today I ordered my 5th pair of Polk db651s for the '91 front doors. These speakers have great sound. Not so much on the bass, for that you need a subwoofer. These speakers are $60 a pair at Amazon.com and $99 a pair at Crutchfield.com. I'm not using an amplifier on anything yet, but have plans to put one on the '91 build.

How do the 5x7s compare to the 6x8s if there even is a difference?
