T98 F215 TRANSMISSION

I finally cracked open my transmission Now, I find I need a new cluster gear, 1st gear, and 2nd gear syncro. Anyone have any sources for gear sets?

As for my dually wheel problem I'm looking into having the centers cut out of my 2 piece wheels and welded into 16" tubeless centers. Thanks Stu for the contact.

A '55, if it is original, is likely (certain?) to be a T98. The '56 production year shows (per Ford parts manuals) to be the first year of the T98A. The two have very different gears. Evidently, they are markedly different; as in tooth pitch swapped from left-hand to right-hand or vise versa. In other words, they will not interchange. Of course, one might be able to replace the whole shootin' match if they were so inclined and had more luck and money than most folks. Parts for the T98 will likely be hard to find and very pricey if new. A donor may work out better for repair. My suggestion: outright replace it with a good used T98 or, better yet, a T98A. T98A parts would be "easier" to find in the future.
If you are set on repair, you might try calling Chuck at Chuck's Trucks, LLC. He can probably help.
Per the Ford parts manual, bearings, seals and synchro's are identical between the two. I'm about to find the truth out in regards to this as I just got a T98A rebuild kit (with synchro's) and I'm going to attempt to restore Albatross' T98. Stay tuned for the gory details on that one! Albatross' gears look darn near new. It has ~ 85k miles and the PO obviously treated it with respect due a piece of farm equipment.

I happen to have a t98 that was in a 53. I havent even so much as looked at it yet so dont know if its a t98a or ???
When i say it was in a 53 it was attached to a flathead and had the 53 specifc bellhousing and the trans does not look the same as the 51 and 52 t98-s that i have.

I'll get some more details and pictures of it.

Is your 215 and T98 in a 52 truck or a 53 truck? The transmission cases and at least one of the internal parts do not interchange across this year break.

38 Coupe, my t98 is in a 55 flatbed. According to the VIN plate my f350 orginally came with a 3 speed and somewhere along its life someone swapped it for this t98 4 speed.

T-98's were used thru 1964, I'll need to know the tooth count on the cluster gear in an attempt to ID what the T-98 is from.

Number Dummy, I'll get that to you tomorrow, have to do my real job today. Thanks for the help. May have found a T98 nearby for $50 on Craigslist. Waiting for a response on the condition, input shaft spline count, etc.

My T98 has a cast top plate and has "T98F215." As I mentioned the VIN plate states my truck came with a 3 speed, so someone replaced the 3 speed with this 4 speed. I have no idea what the Borg Warner transmission series the 3 speed would have been.

Borg Warner T-87 3 speed Heavy Duty would have been original.
This number is worthless for ID'ing what the T-98 is from. Need the tooth count from the cluster.

this one I have here has a 7" long input shaft, (measured from the front of the case not the bearing retainer) side is cast "T98-1R" it was kinda dark this morning I think the "R" was an R and not a "A" ?
the 51 52 t-98's I've got here have a 6" long input shaft.

I will try to clean it off a bit over the next few days and pop the cover off to take a looksee inside!

My Wife just informed me, we will be doing something with the daughter, son-in-law, and grandson tomorrow - so it doesn't look like I'm getting the reverse gear, output shaft, and cluster out tomorrow

I wish family would get their priorities straight

T98 TRANSMISSION

Number Dummy, the large gear on the cluster has 43 teeth, the next gear has 36, the next gear has 27, and the small gear has 17.
