Np205 rebuild question anyone with first hand experience

Np205 rebuild I have a question
regarding a set of needle bearings with shim and retaining ring. When I pulled the shaft apart the bearings of course fell out but so did the shim, and the snap ring was not in the groove but sideways inside the shaft. I'm assuming the snap ring goes into the groove to hold the shim based on the exploded views ive seen and in my Chilton book.
the rebuild instructions I followed were really good minus not mentioning a few other sets of needle bearings.
question is why was the ring out of the groove? I believe the shaft may have caught it in the way out due to the bend in one side of it. Which brings on the main question is the retaining suppose to have that bend? Maybe to help with removal? Or should I cut the bent end off before reinstall? The shaft that goes thru thre is small enough to go thru the ring even with the bend, and my gut tells me its suppose to be that way. But it dont hurt to double check.

The rebuild guide i referenced to

The clip

It all goes in here

My chilton manual

NP205 Rebuild Guide
thats the guide I went off of very good with except of few details. #82 says hold shim keeper up with pick and put needles in. My keeper/shim came out with the needles and the ring was sideways in the bore of the shaft itself. If this helps add any info. I'll also stick the ring back inside to help explain.

This youtube series may have your answer.

I have watched them a couple of times for the heck of it. Check out Part 2 at about 20-21 minutes in. I think it goes over your question. It is a pretty thorough series.

Thank You John that helped alot. I can see his ring is bent one end of his too. I assume thats to allow removal. I wonder why they dont remove the ring and washer drop in the bearings then the washer then the ring avoiding the whole hold the washer up with a pick trick. Guess I'm going to find out ill try that first and see what happens. Maybe getting the ring in knocks everything out and have to start again, or the ring is hard to get out so no one messes with it and I got lucky and popped mine out. I'll report back after I give it a shot.

purchasing a seal and gasket kit from Broncograveyard. It really needed nothing inside barely could even see signs of wear. Truck only has 70k on it but one of the seals was seeping so I figured while its out for engine swap id go thru the tcase and tranny to replace all the seals and anything that looked worn or out of spec.
