13 F150 5.0 (first trip report) MPG's and mountains

Took our first trip in the truck! The family, all four of us and the dog went from Denver to Moab, UT and back. Fully loaded with camping gear and 4 bikes. Over two mountain passes. All in all approximately 1000 miles. Odometer now reads 1314

I am super impressed with everything about this truck so far. Great power getting up the mountain passes, no problem keeping it at 65 mph.

On the longer flat sections I tried hard to keep the truck at about 70 mph, but mostly cruised at 75.

18.8 miles per gallon. Very pleasantly surprised.

I have read that they get better as they break in, can that be possible? I have the 3.55 gears.

Mine has a bit over 2300 miles and it seems to be breaking in well. I was pleasedwith the way the truck performed on a few trips to the VA mountains. Truck has a good power and all. I did not get over 21mpg rolling at 75mph.

That is good to hear. I am glad I did not buy the truck for the gas mileage.

I just did 700 miles in my 3.73 geared Ecoboost and averaged 18.7 running 68-70, so you're getting very good mileage. I'm wishing more and more that I had gone with the 5.0L

sounds like it has more to do with the gearing

True. I wanted the lower gears for towing power and because I might go up in tire size a little after leveling. Still, from 3.55s to 3.73s is only a 5% change in gearing. My main reason for regretting the Ecoboost is I now know about and want one of the hidden winch kits that place it behind the center of the bumper, but that doesn't work with the Ecoboost's intercooler there.
