Drilling a 460 ZF5 to fit IDI
I have a ZF5 with the 460 bolt pattern to put in my IDI. The trans is disassembled and I have new sychros and bearings to put in it, so I can stand the case upright to work on it. I have an adapter plate off of my old engine to use as a template. The 2 top holes needed to be opened up for the bolts to fit, so I did that then bolted the adapter plate to the trans case to use as a template. I am thinking that the holes for the dowels need to be pretty exact as to not put a side load on the input shaft/ pilot bearing. With the bolts backed out 1/2 turn, I can move the adapter plate around a little in relation to the case. At the dowel holes I can get about 1/4" variation on the spot to drill. Should I just center it up, take a leap of faith, drill it and hope for the best or is there a better way? Any other input for this conversion greatly appreciated.

I wouldnt feel comfortable selling a trans that I just rebuilt without trying it first. I have worked on vehicles professionally most of my life, but never been this deep into a MT. I was wondering how re-sellable the trans would be with the bell housing bolts drilled to fit a 460 or a 73. The case is also missing part of one of the reinforcing ribs at the slave cylinder.

If that pic at oilburners is correct, the top two holes are the same. So you could line up the plate to the top holes, bolt one down, check the second one to make sure your dead center didn't mover, then put a bolt in that and tighten it.
That'll leave the plate in the proper position and all you have to do is drill the dowel holes dead center in their position.

How did it turn out? I scored a zf5 from a 460 4x4. I'd like to install it into my 6.9 4x4.
My truck currently has a 6.9 idi with 4x4
- t19 transmission
- borg Warner 1345 transfer case.
I have looked at forums and they are all different when It comes to installing a 460 zf5 into a 6.9 isi
any tips help thank you!
