Yep - finally had to bite the bullet on this one. My M250 wouldn't pass Aircare (the British Columbia Lower Mainland emissions control program) no matter how finely tweaked, so I had the 300ci inline 6 rebuilt by Alec's Automotive here in Vancouver - conveniently located about a ten minute walk from my home. I took Ol' Sketchy through Aircare yesterday and the emissions barely registered on their equipment. I was astounded - she might be the cleanest running truck in North America! A big thumbs up to Rob and the crew at Alec's Automotive - great job! And the big plus - my gas mileage has improved amazingly. I thought the gas gauge was stuck for a week. Nope, just sipping away, instead of the guzzling it was doing before the rebuild! I figure the gas savings will pay for the job in about 6 or 7 years. So better mileage, next to no pollution and probably a few hundred thousand miles available on a new engine - it's just win, win, win! Here's a plug for the lads, if that's allowed: Alec's Automotive Machine Shop :: Engine Rebuilders Vancouver BC V5V 4E3 604-876-7111 -
It doesn't make complete sense to me - perhaps I was there when I signed up. I'm actually in East Van, a lot closer to Sedro than Sihanoukville.
Alec's Automotive did my 428 crank a couple weeks ago. It was refreshing to see their young guys recognize an FE part.

I saw your your truck at Alex's a few weeks ago. I'm also a few minutes away. Small world!

I'm also looking for someone to do some brake work - know anyone in the East Van area? Rob at Alec's Automotive suggested Fred's on Fraser. I've seen a couple of older Ford trucks in my area but no other Mercs, although I did see a blue/white Custom Cab parked at an auto shop a few weeks ago on Kingsway that was mid-60's and could have been either a Ford or a Mercury - couldn't stop to check at the time. Your '66 maybe?
You gotta love a government picking on a near 50 year old vehicle. CRAZY!
John
heh heh - well they pick on me too and I'm older than the truck! Funny thing is, the BC govt will be quitting the Aircare business for cars and light trucks in about a year - too many complaints from the public about the time and money wasted to catch a few old smokers. Anyway, I'm glad I got it done - now I don't have to hang my head or pretend I'm deaf when youngsters start chirping about carbon footprints and looking meaningfully at my truck...

I had assumed it was in reference to Vancouver's vast diversity of immigrant culture.
