Basically, how loud is it?

I need an new exhaust on my truck, and was thinking about just hanging a pair of Headman's into cats and down pipes to point the heat at the road. It's an EFI engine, in case that matters any...

As for noise ordinances, I have never been harassed before. My Bronco was extremely loud with a 4BT and 4" exhaust. It would vibrate the windows of my house when I started it. I just want to know if it's going to be too loud for the wife while we are driving cross country...

 

Loud enough that if your drove by my house regularly I would shoot at you.

Close to 90-100 dB at WOT, enough to cause you hearing loss. Close to 80 dB running under load. Not fun. Buy a muffler or two.

Well despite your aversion to civil language and passive aggressive reply, thanks for providing somewhat of an answer.

I'm looking for an actual answer, as in videos, or actual measurements. That 90-100 dB is with just open headers.

 

it really depends on how long the pipes are, what diameter and how many turns and what degree in the turns.

Probably just 2.5 piping and some cats if I can get away with it... So maybe a total of 2 feet after the cats which are 8in.? The truck honestly will not get driven enough to worry about it locally, it's basically my long haul vehicle for going up north for hunting. I just don't want the wife going nuts...

If I have to go full exhaust it'll be 2.5" with an X-pipe and everything and glass-packs. I would rather avoid that as the last exhaust I put on didn't last long and I feel like I just poured a grand down the toilet for no reason.

 

i drive a chevy with a v8 350 headers and straight pipes that are less then 2 feet, its kinda loud but i just drive it in and out of the shop.

 

You'll understand when you grow up, especially if you destroy your hearing.

She's not sensitive, but I don't want her to hate riding in it. I might just go weld the whole thing up and decide at that point whether to order the glass packs and the rest of the piping...




I'm 33 and partially deaf in my right ear from a perforated ear drum that I got from a 155 shell blowing me out of an MRAP. Take your ego elsewhere, I don't want it here. I came to ask a question not have some random anon on the internet tell me what to do. I have enough people that wear suits and steal money from my paychecks doing that already.

I don't care what a magazine that is trying to sell issues has to say. I only want real world examples or evidence from real people. A 460 has enough power to move a truck with load idling. I've had 1200lbs of Elk in the back and idled down a trail in 4 low with a similar truck that was completely stock.

 

Someone with hearing loss usually knows it does not have to be ear-ringing loud to cause more damage.

The CarCraft thing has dB levels, and it does not appear they pulled them from thin air, but rather did a real test. They appear to be living, breathing people as well.

I had thought about cutouts. That would be a pain to weld up though. Not sure how long it would last either. Seems like more to get torn off. I haven't met many people that have full exhausts out in the desert, for obvious reasons, they get torn off.


It's a magazine, they need to sell subscriptions, so the spin their articles. If they spin some of them, that makes the other unreliable. I only trust real people. You can trust whatever you wish, but I will stick with common folk that like big trucks, off-roading and shooting.

You do not have to be a kid to not want to pour money into something that is simply going to get torn off or rust out within a year. It's called common sense to not want to waste resources on something that has no real use outside of making people more comfortable with me going about my business. I drive mainly in the desert and up in the mountains. If I need to go somewhere in the city I ride a bike. My Bronco used to vibrate windows as a I drove by, and never had a complaint. The issue for me is if the wife would hate it. Hence my question.

As for the magazine, I did find several other things with about the same numbers they post, but yea, they want the ad revenue and they want to sell mags.

My neighbor has Doug Thorleys on his 460 F350 and they do not seem to hang down too low. Not cheap through, but they are CARB approved, something he has to deal with in Ca. They work with all the sensors and cats.

Magnaflow has some big straight through stainless mufflers for their off road systems. Probably a fortune to buy.

I run a 351W with honed stock exhaust manifolds and 2 1/4" pipes with Walker cats and mufflers and dump them right before the axle under the bed. With that setup I can feel vibrations in the floor of my house. So a straight 460 will be very loud.
