This kind of stuff is just going to keep coming.
I wouldn't actually mind an auto drive option at times -- but that's not what seems to be happening.
Everybody's making their own gimmick to 'help you out' , and to 'take over' when you don't respond.
But they're all a bit different, and from the looks of things, they can't be shut off.
I don't know if the government 'qualifies' these systems, but I've never seen anything about that happening.
As Old93 says, how long before they start failing? These are complex systems. I think the Ford one said something about 3 radars and various other sensors. Not to mention the precision steering angle sensors and all of the complex controls.
System failure is bad enough, but what about the environment? It just might be that if you put a bunch of these things together, they'll interfere with each other. They could also have trouble with things like sleet and snow.
Things could get ugly,

look at this on the bright side.
at least one idiot will be speeding along a mountain road and come up on a slower car/truck.
the auto steer will compensate to avoid an accident, and see the road to the right is clear, steering the dipstick and car off a 500ft cliff.
cleansing of the gene pool
