2004 F150 5.4 V3 timing kit
Bone stock 2004 F150 5.4 3V 139,000 miles. This procedure corrected my P340 code and eliminated the startup chain rattle sound. If your truck is running fine and all of the sudden you get rough idle, loss of power, chain rattle and the infamous diesel sound there is a big probability that your timing is also out of sync.
After using the truck for a few weeks with both CMP sensors disconnected I decided to tackle the job of replacing tensioners, tensioners guides, chain guides and correcting the engine timing, (it was off) while in there I also replaced the water and oil pumps. I did not replace my 2004 phasers because they are still good, (classics) same for my VCT solonoids.
The job is timing consuming however, it can be done with the right tools, a reference manual and patience.
Inside the engine cover I discovered multiple parts of my chain guide, I also found some pieces in the oil pan. Both tensioners had bad gaskets and they were leaking (oil starved phasers=diesel sound) Replacing the parts is easy, same with the engine timing, you don`t need any special tools to hold the cams just align the chain marks with the cam and crank marks. Mine jumped a tooth on bank 1. (both CMP sensors have to fire at once regardless of cam position)(advance or retarded)
Check engine light is off, both CMP sensors are connected and the truck is running good.
Spend $134.00 for timing parts $15.00 for motorcraft coolant and $3.00 for power steering fluid (ATF)
After 9 years of solid service I can not complain.

I have the same **** going on. I'm going to do a whole timing job soon I hope. Just not sure if I should do it myself for pay someone to do it, I can't really afford it right now but I'm a little afraid to do it myself. I'm pretty handy I just don't think I want to go through the aggravation. Did you use a book or tutorial on one of these forums? I've been reading about it for the last 7 months or so I'm pretty sure it's the tensioner seals.

I have a Haynes book that I bought when the truck was new, everything you need is in there. As for special tools, the basics a puller for your crankshaft and your power steering pump harbor freight has them for less than $20.00
You do not have to open your AC system just take the canister of its mounts and move the valve cover around until it comes out. (Patience)
The old serpentine belt can be used as a strap wrench to hold the crankshaft pulley and the water pump pulley
I only bought the guides and tensioner, Is very unusual for a chain to stretch beyond usefulness. For timing fold the chain in half, paint one link and also paint the other two end links. Crank key at 10:00 o'clock position, crankshaft sprocket mark at 6:00pm. The single link goes with the crank mark, the double link goes with the cams. (use the middle link on the cams) Chain slack goes to the tensioner guide side.
A job like this at the dealer can run you close to $2,000.00 or more. Good luck
