As you all may or may not know I have a 56 that has been in the family for over 40 years. My step father bought it used in Mississippi, then moved to Arkansas with it, then gave it to me. I drove it for a few years and then gave it to our son. While our son had it it was hit in front of our house by a young driver.
We then parked it for almost 25 years. Since then our son took his life and my Step father died of Cancer. So the truck is back to me.
I spent the better part of a year trying to find someone to straighten the frame, even bought a different frame, but finally found a small body shop to straighten the frame. Once back I wire bushed the frame and gave it two coats of POR 15.
I then Cleaned up the old 272 and drove it around a bit.
While recording a video of the truck running it started to blow white smoke. Needless to say a head gasket gave way.
So I found a 292 +030 and rebuilt it with ECZ G heads, "B" 4 barrel intake and a Holley 470 CFM carb. I backed it up with a Flat-O C4 adapter and C4.
Installed the power train and added Toyota Power steering.
I then headed to the rear of the truck. Added a 9" rearend, had a drive shaft made & changed all the worn spring shackles to new poly bushing ones from MidFifty.
What is the hole in the frame rail for near the rear spring shackle? That doesnt look good, all the weight of the back of the truck is going to try and bend the frame there. It looks like one good bump will fold that up.
Two questions:#1 do 56 cabs rust out there more so than the slant cabs?
#2 what kind or color of paint did you use for your exhaust manifolds and the crossover pipe? I don't like the color of mine. I used a high temp raw or natural mainfold paint. It looks too aluminum or silver to me. Almost the same color of the argent valve covers. I would like some contrast between the two.

I have two 53-55 Cabs with good roofs but there are a bunch of 56s that have rust in their roofs. All 53-56 Cabs have trouble with rust in their corners.
I used High Temp satin black engine paint on my entire exhaust system. I can't verify how well it holds up as I really haven't driven it yet.
The reason I am fixing the cab is when I went to try to mount the dual master cylinder under the cab the pedal hit The floor before it completed it's travel . The metal cab mount welded to the floor board and rocker panel was crushed and separated.

It's for my suburban fuel tanks filler neck. I reinforced it with a 4" pipe but still may end up boxing the frame rail too. Read a lot on this mod but mine is very close to the rear spring shackle as you can see in the picture.

Maybe you can cut and angle the filler to go over the frame like the van tank i use?
I like how yours is behind the shackle mount location. Mine is mounted to the shock mount crossmember. What year & size is yours? Mine is a 22 Gallon.
Tank is a 1995 G10 chevy van, 22 gallon, it has an internal pan and fuel pump for fuel injection. 1986 would be the same tank but for carb applications. Rock auto has them as well as the sending unit, but I have been buying them here.
