Good deal Darin. I'd like to do studs and stuff now, but that's gonna have to wait.

I can see that Bill. You have enough on your plate as it is! I know how that goes, I'd have liked to be able to do them last winter.

Picked up the oil at napa today. 80 bucks for 4 gallons, not bad.

I got the passengers side done this weekend, studs and springs. I only had to raise the motor on that side for one stud, then did all the springs while I had it up. No other work needed to get at the studs on that side. I didn't work too hard. Didn't have much time on it yesterday.

I should get the other side done on thanksgiving, then get it back together by the weekend.

You remind me of my roommates at college. They partied 24/7 and carried a 4.0 average. Me, I was in the library studying my *** off!! Get my point, .

I'm glad your making such good progress Darin.

Hey guys,

I didn't want o hijack this thread at all, just had a quick question.

What do you all consider the cutoff for when studs/springs and pushrods are required? I say cutoff as in turbo/ injector size? I was not planning to do this untill the motor needed to be rebuilt, but are stage 1's and a S366 screaming for this upgrade to be done?

I know they are 1000$ insurance against HG failure, but are they truly needed for a very mild motor/injector/turbo combo that is driven 95% of the time in a stock tune?

Just thought I'd ask since you all are doing it :-)

Well, with my stage ones I can hit 40lbs of boost on the S366. From what I've read anytime you start getting above 35 you better have studs in. I was backing out on hills from high boost last year towing instead of egt's.

If you're just daily driving in a stock tune, you'll be fine. You just don't want to push the bigger boost/backpressure numbers without some studs. Springs are a little stronger for better valve control, and the pushrods are stronger also.

Thanks for the info. I will see what we are actually pushing with the s366 when it goes in. Good to know the cut off boost pressure!

Thank you!

Sorry to continue the hijack... but isn't the drive pressure the real issue? I am wondering since the s366 will have a better drive pressure ratio you may be ok at 40 psi boost with an s366, but not with a stock turbo over 35 psi. Just a thought...

Do the valve springs allow you to rev it higher?

Phil, I'm no turbo expert, but this is how i understood it. From what I've read it is the backpressure to be worried about, but its gonna be at least 1:1 with the boost, and the same 35 or so is pushing your luck with the stock head bolts. A head gasket will let loose eventually there.

As far as revving higher with the new springs, if your tuning allows it, probably. Basically though they just control the valvetrain better with more seat and open pressures.

That depends on how many RPMs you plan to run. Realistically, you're not going to spin insane RPMs without running a pretty fast injector or aftermarket injection system. IMO, if you plan to go 4000 or more RPM, call Swamps.. they'll tell you what you need. They've been pushing the 7.3 RPM range quite a bit lately.
