Why would this happen???

Sunday morning I started my truck and after a couple minutes of it running while I was loading my trap guns it started puking coolant out of my coolant tank, through the lid.

I turned the truck off, cracked the cap a little to bleed off pressure and then retightened and no issues. The puking put me about 3" below the minimum mark. The truck was cold when I started so there was no way it could have been overheating.

Stuck thermostat. Never had it happen on my truck, but that's a pretty common symptom on most vehicles. Did the water temp needle in the gauge cluster indicate the truck was overheating?

No. It actually didn't register for a little while and then the heater wouln't blow warm air for a while either, even though the water was hot.

Guess I need a new t-stat. Wonderful.

That is pretty easy to get to right? On top of the water pump (which is brand new) if I am not mistaken. Just never really paid attention that particular piece when I did the pump.

Yup. It's right there, front-and-center.

Watch for good O-ring sealing afterward, however, as some don't get it right the first time.

Yeah its easy. You might want to get a new thermostat housing and do both at the same time. Make sure you evenly torque the 3 bolts and use some RTV so you don't get a leak after its done.

I had one of the housing bolts break off on me when I did it. Had I soaked the bolts with PB blaster and turned them slowly, I think I could have babied it out. Take your time on this one.

sounds more like a head gasket to me, a stuck thermostat won't make it over pressurize in a few minutes. a head gasket will.

And why would it do that?

Truck runs fine now. But the cool/warm setting on the heater still is not instane like it used to be.

How new? As in, JUST replaced and you have air in the coolant passages?

Your truck is fine. Add more coolant and keep an eye on it until the "usage" tapers off and the heater works normally.

Did you replace the thermostat when the pump was replaced?

Did you use the long-stem, or short-stem, thermostat?

Makes a big difference!

NO. I did not replace the t-stat when I replaced the pump. I replaced the T-stat last year because it was leaking. Then this spring the old pump blew one of the inner seal and blew coolant all over.

After the old engine blew I got a used motor and cleaned it up. I put the new pump on that and tossed the old pump since it was corroded.

As for short or long stem, I have no idea. whatever carquest sent when I gave them my vehicle specifics. Guess I will find out tomorrow when the new one gets here.

While I'm not sold that his problem is more than just air trapped in his cooling system, there is another way for this to happen... like it did to me. A combination of loose injector and cracked cup will allow combustion gasses into the coolant... making a big mess.

I stress that I don't yet think the OP is in orbit with either of these serious issues yet.

Again... those are just the worst-case scenarios. Is your coolant and degas bottle clean? The scenarios above make a blackened mess. I'm with cleatus12r on this.
