EOT and TFT

I read on here somewhere that the EOT and TFT should be the same, or very close to it (Scanguage II readings). If my temps aren't close, what's the issue, and at how much of a difference should register a concern?

I've just plugged in the SII, and I'm getting 197* for EOT and less, like 150* for TFT. This is truck warmed up, running, pulling a heavy trailer. EGR deleted.

The truck is running fine, pulling fine. Only issue is cold start crank takes 6-7 seconds. Warm start fires right up. I'm thinking this is a separate issue?

Nervous because the last mechanic put a loose Napa filter on during fluid changes and blew up the right side injectors and cracked the turbo. Just got the truck back at a $3500 cost (yes, there's discussion going on now about reimbursement.....a whole separate issue )

Youre thinking of the EOT and the ECT (coolant) temps. Should be less than 15* difference unloaded crusing @65mph no load. Your trans temp sound good-especially towing .

You're right, I posted the wrong initials (duh). I'll check them when not pulling the trailer, but if they are 50* different or so, is this a problem?

If your EOT and ECT are 50° difference you do have a problem. Plugged oil cooler, and if you don't replace it soon you could have a ruptured EGR cooler. Best to fix it before you have to tear down the motor.

Oh yes. EOT/ECT more than 15* is an oil cooler change. More than 25* or oil temp over 230*, I would park it. 50* is pull over!

That being said, ECT of 150 truck hasn't warmed up. If you've been towing for a few miles and it's still 150 suspect a bad sensor (or dangerously low coolant). Temp difference should be measured with ECT more than 190*.

To check sensors (EOT/ECT) let truck cold soak overnight, flip the key on, and turn on Scangauge manually. The should be within a few degrees of each other (ECT/EOT/ and TFT) and should be close to outside air temp.

Thanks guys. The dealership just called and said the cold side oil cooler is spewing some oil. They say I would have noticed a power drop but for the SCT mod on it.

On a side note, the truck cranks cold at about 7 seconds, but the diagnostics still have everything in spec. They SUSPECT the HPOP but can't guarantee that's the problem. Jeez.

I'm discovering having one of these trucks is a real challenge.....

Because your EGR cooler has been deleted the EOT/ECT isn't near as critical as there is no EGR cooler to rupture due to low coolant flow, but they should still be paid attention to. And your cold start issue is likely the FICM starting to fail. Hpo system leaks show up on hot starts and if the leak is bad enough it will not start at all, and FICM problems usually arise on cold starts.

Agreed with mustang on the potential ficm. Other possibilities include glow plug issue or a very small chance of injector stiction (but that usually cause a rough cold Idle and not a long cold start).

...and the FICM should never be below 45v.

Sorry to thread jack, but have a question. Am I ok if I get to say 228* eot on an 8% grade towing around 5,000lbs? Its a pretty long hill, 4 to 5 miles? I've seen 230* once and it was about 105* out side..
