1983 Ford NU-WA RV w/460 V8

I have acquired a 1983 Class C motorhome. It has an allegedly rebuilt 460 V8 w/big Edlebrock 4bbl carburetor. The transmission is the C6 with a GEAR VENDOR OVERDRIVE installed on it. I don't know a lot about the vehicle but it seems to run and shift good and the dash AC works!. The advantage of having the GEAR VENDOR OD seems to be lost because the kickdown system needs adjusted. In auto-mode the kickdown causes the transmission to downshift on even the slightest grade so MPG gains are lost from constant downshifting. Previous owner said he just used the OD in the manual mode. It has the foot-operated button on the driverside wheelwell hump near the high/low beam foot-button easy to miss the correct button and hit the high/low beams if not careful. Is there a way to adjust the kickdown (rod?) to not downshift the transmission so quickly? Thoughts appreciated. Also have the huge chrome plated Edlebrock 4bbl carb that almost has to be feathered to get to highway speeds of 60-70mph without sputtering and occasionally backfiring out the exhaust. Thanks!
