2nd test drive didn't go well so now I need Help

First, here is a before photo and an after photo.

I took the truck out for a 2nd test drive after I put new tires on. I parked it and had lunch, before I was going to take it to get the exhaust installed. When I put it in reverse it would not move. As I let out the clutch it acted like the brakes were locked. It would move forwards. I end up pulling it backwards with a tractor and driving it into my shop.

Is there anything I should check before I need to rebuild or replace the trans? If the trans is not an easy fix I think I'll put in an Automatic. Or an updated trans with overdrive.

If that's the case I will be asking what autotrans will work with my 223 engine.

Do you still have the colum shift, it might be dragging second along with reverse, causing it to lock up. Does it roll freely in natural, check the linkage first before pulling it apart.

It has a floor shift. I'll get it up on jack stands tonight and see what the linkage is doing. It does roll both ways just fine and it shifts into first and drives.

I finally got a chance to get under the truck. I fiddled with the linkage. I got the truck in reverse. I hope the fact that I could get it in reverse is a sign that the linkage it the only problem. I'll have more time this week end to mess with it.

Love the color of that truck. It would be real popular down here in Baton Rouge (home of LSU). Good luck with the tranny. I'm planning to take my '59 to a specialist and have the tranny rebuilt. Let us know how it goes.

I am digging the truck.

I would guess the linkage is the only problem. I look forward to hearing how the next test drive goes.

It was the linkage and an adjustment to the clutch. I had the help of a friend. First we needed to clean and lube the linkage. We adjusted the set screws and took it for a test drive. A few more adjustment and a few more test drives and now it shifts right. New tie rods are next.

Good news! Much cheaper than the alternatives.
