02 F250 no reverse OD light blinks

I've got a 2002 f250 7.3L 4x4 auto trans and I've done quite a bit of searching and cant seem to find any definite answer. I drove 40 miles today no problem. pulled into a stall at sonic and when I went to leave no reverse. I was even on a downhill slope, but it wouldn't budge. I got a friend to come up there and we tried to pull it, wouldn't budge.... I disconnected the driveshaft and it rolled downhill without us even having to hook onto it again. Once it was out I hopped in and put it in drive and it took right off. It did feel like maybe I had to give it a little extra gas to get it moving but maybe I'm just paranoid. I know once I got on the road it was cruising 65 no problem in drive. I got it to my job and noticed that when I put it in reverse the OD off light flashes and if I mash the gas with it in reverse it actually acts like its trying to push it forwards. I did jack the rear end up and put it in reverse and the tires make a half rotation but in the wrong direction then come to a dead stop.... with the tires jacked up off the ground Drive would spin them, 2 would spin them, but 1 would stop them like somebody locked up the brakes.

I'm really just hoping somebody can give me an idea of what to expect price wise when I take it to a trans shop..... Also what is the name for the transmission in my truck? I'm not familiar with fords at all. thanks.

By the sound of that the forward clutch is seized. When reverse is selected it acts as a brake. Does it try to drive in neutral and load the engine in Park?

The flashing OD lights means there are codes set so have them read.
I forgot to add. You have an E4OD transmission. To confirm this count the pan bolts. There should be 20.

No, it's a 4R100 transmission. 1998 was the last year that Ford built an E4OD.

Right Mark.

"The E4OD was updated in 1998 and this new transmission was the last rendition of the C6. It was largely the same as the E40D, but with some changes to internal components to address durability concerns when put behind the ever increasingly powerful Powerstroke Diesel Engine. In 1999 it was fitted with a PTO for auxiliary equipment attached to heavy duty trucks. To follow Fords new naming schemes for its other transmissions, Ford renamed the E4OD the 4R100."

I took it to a transmission shop on Saturday. The guy said to rebuild it and a new tc would be $1,800 and itd have a 3 year 36k mile warranty. I called a couple other places and told them no reverse no L1 and they didn't even wanna touch it they said to just buy a new trans. Did I make a mistake having it rebuilt? I don't know anyone who has gone to him before but I know his shop has been there at least 8 years and he said he's been building transmissions for 20 years and he could build a 4r100 with his eyes closed. I asked about the case being cracked or hard parts being broken and he assured me the maximum price is $1800. Sound like a bad deal?

$1800 sounds about right, its much the same quote I've heard here in my area too for these types of transmissions. Some have been quoted in excess of $2700 but mostly through dealership shops, not independent or transmission specialty outlets.

With that mileage and time warranty coupled with this guy's same location for a while it seems a good bet. Get the details of his guarantee clear in your head or on paper so there's no misunderstandings should anything happen.

Got my truck back yesterday. The guy kept all the parts so that he could show me what all was wrong. Well I got a new case and everything from the tail shaft back... He said the shaft stripped out the case and everything behind it was fused together and had to be replaced. So for $1800 I got all that stuff replaced with new parts a HD rebuild kit and a transgo tugger shift kit with a 3 year warranty. I'm pretty happy especially since he had it all done in 3 days. Hopefully it holds up I've drove it about 150 miles so far without any issues so hopefully it's good for another 160,000 miles.
